First things I ever made for sale were t-shirts. You just need a graphics app that can make 32-bit TGA files, and the free templates for SL Clothes that are on the Texture Tips forums and on the Downloads page of this website. T-stirts are pretty simple to make, and teach you the main skills for making nicer clothes. Just requires basic skills with things like Photoshop. No whiz-kid stuff.
Furniture is a bit harder. The prims are not to hard to do, and you can purchase pose ball sets to resell with your creations. Making your own animations allows you to make far better furniture, but that is a pretty advanced skill.
