Hi, Is there a way to hide my groups from being seen by other people in the profile screen? ie can I join a group without it appearing in my profile?
Cheers

After looking to make sure, that option is only choosable by the groups owner.

Yes it's an unfortunate limitation. There are various levels of group visibility. A group owner can decide whether to list the group in Group Search, and also whether the members of individual group roles can be displayed to non-members in the group interface. I don't know which of those options prevents the group from showing up in your profile when people scope you out.
Two possible suggestions for you: 1. Ask group owners whether they'd consider hiding membership of the role you belong to, or perhaps add a new role for members who don't wish to be listed publicly. (Again, I don't know if this prevents the group from showing up on your profile, even though I know such an ability exists.) 2. Create an alt whose sole purpose is to belong to those other groups. Not always convenient, but if others in those groups know who your alt is, and if you leave group notices enabled, you should be fine. _____________________

In the beginning I went through cycles of joining and then "cleaning" my profile. Now I just live with people knowing what I'm into
![]() Oh, and I liked exploring Desperation Isle a week or so ago, and then revisiting recently (that comment will not mean anything if the reader has the default set-up and can't see signatures, and/or if that sig gets changed). ![]() |

It would be nice to not be able to see what group someone was in by looking at their profile. We should be able to mark sections of our profile as PRIVATE or FRIENDS ONLY. That would rock!
But there's no real way to stop others from getting group lists unless it's just a highly restricted group. Otherwise, other can weasel their way into the group however they can and see the list of group members then. Sounds like the start of a very useful feature suggestion. _____________________

Oh but as I've been told..."There is no Privacy in Second Life". I agree though, it would be nice to have control over that part of our profiles. _____________________

I don't know which of those options prevents the group from showing up in your profile when people scope you out. Its silly, actually. Here are the options; Show in Group List Publish on the web Open enrollment (doesnt apply to the question) If Show in group list stays unchecked you wont ever see it in someones group list unless you are of the same group. Im guessing that publish on the web just makes it searchable or not? Not sure as I havent tested it. However, under roles there is the following option; Members are visable This simply means that if you look at the group and are not a member, you wont see that ROLE in the list of names within the group. However, the group STILL shows up in their group list. So you could be looking at someones profile, see the group and open it to look at the group but it wouldnt list all the names of people in it. IMO, if a member role isnt visable it shouldnt show up in their group list either. I suspect that is to protect members of groups from getting spam from someone of a like minded group, but having it visable in the profile doesnt offer much in being invisable either. _____________________

Not sure as I havent tested it. Thank you for confirming that. EDIT: Oh the Publish on Web doesn't do anything yet, although there are those that believe it's a step toward the time when the back-end gets open-sourced. Whatever that's supposed to mean. _____________________

You can suggest it in the JIRA! The Lindens work on stuff that gets the most votes... |

I see them on profiles too, but those say its about publishing the stuff on the SL website. Will be interesting to see what it is when it does something lol _____________________

Will be interesting to see what it is when it does something lol Hey- I was wrong! You can search for groups on the main search page. (Select 'SL Groups' from the drop-down list.) I never knew groups were searchable there! All it does is return a non-sortable list of group names and membership counts, so kind of useless... but still- it does end up at the site, whereas I thought it didn't. _____________________

Oooooh, I always thought 'show in group list' was referring to the groups you can (or can't, if unchecked) find in search groups, as opposed to avatar group lists.
I didn't know you could do that ![]() |
