Hi everyone Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask this, but I need to find an answer... ) Once you create clothing, hair etc and want to sell them in sl, how does it work? I know you rent retail space, but can someone tell me how a pic of my clothing enables someone to purchase it....? Is it something already set up in the commercial/retail areas of sl? Thanks for helping

Hi! And welcome to the grid.
What you do is put the items in a 'prim' and put a picture of what's inside on the prim - the prim acts as a container, or box for the stuff sold. You then set the prim for sale for $L ____ (whatever amount) and make sure you set the permissions for the stuff - i.e. can they have infinite copies of it, can they transfer it to friends, &c &c. That's essentially how it works. Good luck!

Hello, Velvety and welcome to the forums. It might be easier to try one of the tutorial sites. Here is a link to one place, specifically to the "How to set up a shop in SL" entry. There are many other sections at that place as well http://www.sltutorials.net/mtree/Merchandising_%26_Business/How_To_Set_Up_Shop_In_Secondlife_-_Part_1/details/But in a nut shell, you make a 1 prim box and while in edit mode with that box: Put all the stuff inside you want to sell Place a picture of the items as the box's texture Set the price Set it for sale Set it to sell a copy And your done.

As Desmond has said - you can create a prim box, resize it and texture it with a picture of what you are selling, put your sale objects inside the box, and then set it for sale using the edit function. When editing, you open the contents tab and drag and drop your sale objects into the contents. Residents can then click on the box and chose to "buy".
For more sophisticated sales mechanisms there are a number of scripted vendors available - such as JEVN and Hippo-vend ones. These allow multiple objects to be sold from the one vendor.

Thanks for helping Hi, Velvety! I recently took a class on making a simple vendor that looks nice and went through all the steps of setting it up very nicely. It was at Insight Virtual College (IVC) taught by Lara Shepherd. You can look in Events - Education and either type in IVC or the class name: Selling with a simple vendor Good luck to you

There are several different mechanisms available.
The simplest is to simply set the object for sale. You can recognize products that do this, because they'll have the 'Buy' option in the pie menu. It's possible to do this without any scripts, but you'll need to learn about setting the various options. You don't want to accidentally set it so that the first person who comes along buys the only copy, with the vendor disappearing from your store. You should also learn how to do this for selling a bundle of objects rather than just a single item. As a consumer, I prefer systems that do this (either directly or indirectly), because the Buy operation shows a complete list of the contents along with their permissions.
To learn this, I suggest getting a friend or an alt, and experimenting with the various settings. You build and configure plain boxes and white t-shirts, the friend buys (either for 0 or 1 Lindens), and you get to learn how various settings affect the result.
An older mechanism is to have a script that delivers the product upon being paid the right amount. I assume there are some scripts that do this in the script library. This mechanism is useful if you want to offer discount cards or other custom buying experiences.
Finally, there are vendors that you can buy and use. There are three main advantages to a vendor. One is that you can maintain a central inventory, and the vendor will update the products it has automatically. This is valuable if you have more than one store. The second is that it is prim-efficient. You can pack many products into a vendor with only a few prims, instead of having a sign for each product. The third is that they are download-efficient. A large store for which every product has its own prim can take a huge amount of time to render. A vendor, which only displays a small subset of the available items, will download much more quickly. The downside is that the user then has to flip through the vendor to find the item of interest. Clothing and hair stores, in general, are moving away from vendors. Stores selling animations and gestures are far more likely to be using them, for reasons that should be clear if you think about it.

You might want to check out NCI (New Citizen's Institute) on the grid - they run classes on everything from selling to building to land to... you name it, and are a great resource. Enjoy!

You only need to be a premium member if you want to own land. There are lots of places where you can rent a bit of land owned by someone else and set up your store there.
