I see that there are now some ads which cost the advertiser six digits, but when I try to place one I can only enter up to five digits. Anyone know how it is done?

Maybe it's tied to your trading limits?

how could you possibly need an ad that high lol

Im perplexed at 50k ads.

Good job to those companies making enough money they can afford these huge weekly ad expenses!

the trick is that by placing their ads at this value, nobody can put an ad over it (5digits max, at least with the official client) , it effectively place them always at the roof of the classified system, thus locking everything else below (special characters to influence alphabetical sorting).

Some call this "business" ... -_-

That’s why I never use classifieds, ether to place an advert or find a service.
Such tactics effectively render classifieds useless. For 30L$ a week a properly worded description in search places is far more effective.

But if you have cash to throw away good for you :)

I have a few classifieds, and they are working for me. But I never spend more than the minimum L$50 on any of them, and indeed all of them, plus the L$30 for search places, are paid for through my weekly stipends. In that sense, the ads cost me nothing.

My observations with the classifieds is if you can make your ad copy stand out and if you are not in a saturated market, you don't need to 'buy your way up the list'.

Other potential values of a really high-price classified:

1. You're trying to create a brand-new field. Search terms aren't relevant, so you need to be at the very top of the list.

2. You're hoping to reach people who just do an open-ended look at the classifieds with no search terms. I do that occasionally to glance at the "headlines".

But yes... you'd have to be doing a LOT of business to justify an L$99999 placement, let alone something costing even more!

BTW. it appears that the First Look client can place ads at prices higher than L$99999. I believe that's how people are doing it.

Actually, whenever I search the classifieds I go first to the bottom of the list and work upwards.

Makes sense to me..

If a merchant is paying that much in advertising, they are probably recouping the costs in the prices of their merchandise. In which case, I'd rather find a similar quality product, at a lower price, elsewhere.

I never look at the classifieds and mostly just tend to rely on word-of-mouth or a review on one of the blogs I follow.

After looking, there's only one store I buy at listed near the top, which also marks the last time I'll buy from there. I don't have any problem paying the prices there, but if the only reason the prices are above average is to pay an inordinate amount for a classifieds, I'll spend my money elsewhere and stop referring people to go have a look there.

Just thought i'd add to this :) kitty, i know your a customer of mine ,but i wouldnt be 'near the top' so I dont think its me your referring to, but just to point out, anyone thats been following my business knows I've actually REDUCED prices since placing "expensive" classifieds. Classifieds bring more business, which in turn allowed me to reduce prices across the board, build a bigger store and continue to add new items

Yeah, paying a lot for a classified isn't just a waste of money, it's to increase your business. Any sane business isn't going to spend a lot on classfieds if it weren't worth it in terms of increasing sales. You don't jack up prices in order to subsidize an ad, a good ad pays for itself.

It certainly wasn't you :).

It's probably not very rational or fair either, but I by far prefer stores who do something for their existing customers, or give something back, rather than those who would simply waste over L$100k on a silly ad :o.

If it was a scheme of "every 100th buying customer gets L$1k or more" it would probably net the same amount, yet feel entirely different. One group I'm in does a semi-regular "whoever shows up first wearing this style gets a gift certificate" and even if I had it, I wouldn't bother, but - to me - it shows an appreciation for their customers which in turn makes me all the more impressed/excited about it to rave about it (it may all still be as fake as calculated as an ad, but it doesn't feel that way :)).
