Ok this may be a very broad qustion but Im looking for new ideas. Just paid off the car and I got some money to spend on a Island for no real purpose but to play. If im going to fork over the monthly money I would like to sit up some kinda business to help off set it. Ive done the house rental, malls and clubs on the main land with out any luck. Any one got any fresh Ideas for something ?? If you dont want to make it public knowledge email me at spinningliketaz@yahoo.com and maybe we can work on a partnership.

Sounds like you are doing it mainly for fun - why not simply share the island with some friends? There's no magic bullet to making a lot of money in SL, especially with an island. Think of it like... buying an empty building RL. You could start a business there, sure, world's wide open, anything goes. But until you get established businesswise you are gonna pay a lot of money, no way around it.

Do what's fun, do what you love....

Hey, I just did the same thing--paid off a bunch of things, did a bit of that, came up with some extra money and income, so I bought an island. Got it on June 15.
I only had a vague idea of what I wanted to do, something with a sci-fi theme, learn more about terraforming, have some openspace for some natural environments, mainly. I like to collect sci-fi themed objects from around sl, so it's headed in the direction of a Science Fiction museum.
In the meantime I offered parcels of land to friends I've made in sl who are somewhat like-minded and who can contribute to the sim just by showing up. They get the parcels at cost, which is a good deal for them, and the sim gets some interesting builds and some interesting antics. Other friends who didn't want parcels can just come and hang out. Right now we're going through a three-month testing and prototyping period, basically no rules, have fun, and let's see what happens.
So, the sim is nowhere near paying for itself, but it's been a no-lag hoot so far, and we all seem to be learning things.
Stop by if you want, it's always a work in progress: The Unknown Country.

My friend who knows bit about islands, etc said when it comes to islands usually they are hard to become self supporting unless you're extremely lucky or unless got the following: 1) You got well established business already that has earned lot of Lindens prior to moving to Island 2) You can pay for it yourself regardless if you have renters or not. I just would encourage you to enjoy it personally being away from mainland and being able to afford it as long as you can. Hopefully you'll make lot of friends who want to support the project and will help later with the tier because they really love the place or want to help you out.

I bought a sim for almost identical reasons to Klang Wopat, although I've handled it a bit differently. I terraformed and thought about the visual theme and covenant with a few friends with whom I had already cooperatively owned mainland parcels. They have land on my sim for cost (including purchase price), although I've also gained two smaller, month-to-month tenants.
For me, it's more important that the sim continue to have a good community feel than that it be full and making a profit. In fact, the covenant and fee structure have been designed to, at best, break even. I just don't want to mix the mindset of trying to create a successful business with what is a recreational pastime.

I can't answer your question, but if you have money to spend on an island for no purpose.......What city do you live in? And are you single?..and really a guy? (Actually the last one isn't that important really.

From: Jimmy Glineux All good advice.... Gonna take the plunge and see what happens. thank you Sounds like a plan! I just finished my first month, and things are sort of firming up, but it's still a learning experience, the ideas keep coming, and things keep changing. I always like to work to a plan (I r a enganear) but there's something to say for the creative flow you can experience by just having a general concept of what you want to do, and then working through it and modifying as you go. Sort of a new experience for me. Lot's of fun, sometimes frustrating, always interesting. Lots of freedom, and a good community. Let us know how it goes!

I'm in the glorious state of New Jersey, Jim. Besides the 300 a month, what is the cost to buy the island? That's the biggie for me.

When i was younger and had an extra $300 a month, I blew it all on booze, drugs, CDs and cassette tapes. You kids are luck to have SL. I suggest you play the stock market for a year with the money. Then next year you can buy five islands.
