I see a few houese and shops in the sky. How do you buy an area in the sky? Do you have to buy the land under it?

Hi Jaydin,
When you rent or buy a plot of land, you control the entire column of airspace (and groundspace) above and below the surface of the land as well. You can build anywhere in this column. To get really high you might need a flight feather or ultra flight wings; lots of that stuff is a freebie. Try the Freebie Warehouse for lots of free stuff.

You can make a platform or house on the ground of your land, and after linking it you can sit on something (linked) on, or in, it and reset the altitude in build/edit mode to, say, 500m. Once up in the sky, you can landmark it and then you'll be able to teleport there. Or you can set 'home' to there.

Jaydin, I just wanted to hug you when I read this question. It so reminded me of the wonder of the sky houses when I first got into SL.
Welcome to SL and have fun.

What does that mean and how would you do it?

Jayden - also remember to build at 700 meters or lower - things don't always work correctly about 700-750 meters.
Residents frequently keep their ground builds PG, then have a small skybox or home 600 meters up for more risque stuff.......
Also, just once, in preferences-graphics - set your draw distance to 500 meters, you will be amazed by all the stuff floating in the sky - not just houses, but all manner of lost items that escaped the owner while he/she was building <grin>
