I'm wondering if anyone else has to relog every five to ten minutes do to constant lag and high bandwidth. I don't know what to do anymore, I've posted something like this in the linden answers area. This kind of issue isn't getting looked into, being I've been having to continue this pattern of relogging.....

I have the same problem all the time. It does not even let me TP to my own darn land at times. I have to wait for 10 minutes before I can view the objects around me. Women always look naked with no clothes because the lag keeps them from dressing up soon. I hear you...

Actually, LL is looking into this issue. Some say the cause is LL being unprepared for the influx of new Residents lately. OThers say it's LL trottling bandwidth themselves since they are paying so much all of a sudden. LL states it's a software/bandwidth issue that they are working to fix. But no, you are not alone. The packetloss and bandwidth sucks lately. ~Jessy

Reduce our draw distance
10-31-2006 11:55
I keep my draw distance at 64 and increase it to 128, at the most, on the mainland. There is so much junk around on the mainland that a higher draw distance is just too laggy.

Whilst it's undeniable that some of the issues are LL's end.. dont' forget your end can effect thing's.
If your Broadband connection is low end it may not be able to sustain high data rates (the highest SL supports is 1.5mb.. if your ISP is 1meg - admitadly rare these days but still around - then you'll get dataloss.
Also the spec of your computer can effect things. Even with some packetloss I suffer minimal problems.. reason being I have a decent PC. I run 256 draw distance, max details etc. and suffer no problems.
Therefore may sure your PC is setup right and it'll help. This isn't to say LL doesn't need to improve things.. just to highlight that the problems are often partially caused by people setup's especially when their PC specs are really too low for SL ( either right on the minimum or even below ).

I don't think refusing to TP is related to the end config of the user PC though - it's the LL network topology & performance inside the farm.
Isn't it?

Isn't it? Not sure about that. I sometimes leave my draw distance at 512 when I TP away from my estate to the mainland and that causes huge problems for me. On arrival on the mainland I cannot do anything...even if I manage to reduce my draw distance to 64. Nothing works, including teleporting, walking, etc. The only option is to reduce the draw distance and wait. Even if SL recovers from that, a crash is only a few minutes away. It is pretty consistent these days. I did not experience SL crashes until recently and I have a good system with a great video card. So, part of the problem with lag is SL, but we also need to make sure our systems and settings are correct for SL to work as it should.

Well, I noticed a bit more lag lately and when I arrive at a new place it takes longer for things to rezz, but I have noticed no packetloss yet.

so as an interim measure should we be asking for a tag on a region that forces a certain draw distance? That way the non-techies and n00bs and such who won't understand such an idea, can be "obliged" to cut back the load they exert.

The lag from draw distance is all client-side. That is, it only effects that person, not the server. While people are correct in saying that many things contribute to packet-loss and lag, the current problems are not that of the customers. LL openly admits the problem lies with them, and those of us who do look for these things have had problems not only with settings we had before the packet-loss usse, but have continued to have them even when reducing client-side settings to lower overall load. In short, a Reseident may use thier preference settings to alieviate some of the effects of the packet-loss, but it is completely in LL's hands to fix the cause. ~Jessy

Jessy - I can find nowhere where LL admits there is a bandwidth problem....but there clearly is. I was running fairly consistently a month ago. Today if there are more than a dozen AVs nearby, I'm in trouble.

As a Samurai Island regular, duels are very sensitive to lag and I have noticed a big difference when even 8 avatars are around, especially ones with a lot of attachments, and potentially active scripts. Since my business partner and I recently purchased an Island Sim, and I will be co-managing it, I am curious if any experienced Sim owners know any other ways to reduce lag on the Estate side. thank you.

Packet loss has been a constant and considerable problem for me ever since the last update, and the optional update did nothing to improve it, as they had mentioned it might.
Prior to the optional update, Kelly or someone in the Second Life Answers answered me that they knew packet loss was a problem, and they were working on it.
Meanwhile, I just do everythign 50% slower than I already did.

This packet loss problem is not strictly client side ( [Edit]or at least, not due to user-controllable factors, though it could be the SL client software). I do not recall specifically where I saw that LL admitted there was a problem, but I do recall with certainty having seen it. I believe it was on the SL blog, but I can't be bothered to double-check right now I remember reading about bandwidth throttling and balancing heuristics that needed tweaking, and other related things. Fact is, SL has a disproportionately high number of technical professionals among it's user base, even among MMORPGS. And many of those technically proficient people are reporting that without having changed *anything* client-side, packet loss and other issues that contribute to the perception of lag increased immediately upon installing the new client and logging in after a recent update. It is indeed a great deal worse than before, regardless of the cause, but I am quite confident that it is not solely on my end.

A dozen avs and a thousand scripts in a sim shouldn't slow anything down. Yet it does. How do the sandpits do it? Were not getting the full story and never will. Just like everything on this planet, real or otherwise, it's all smoke and mirrors. It's made up as we go along. Worst thing I did was buy land! Now I can't move. I'll be cancelling and starting again asap.

From: Kornscope Komachi How do the sandpits do it? If you mean the SandBoxes, well, there are perhaps a lot of reasons. My experience obviously doesn't match yours, though, because in my experience the only two things worse than a sandbox are a club and the Sawrey sim
