But I also enjoy the resident's own creativity. Cool as it is - why copy a movie? This is cool and sexy too.

That's Shiva from Final Fantasy X, so it's just as much a copy as anything based on Avatar or any other game/movie.

I think it is already being done, but im not inworld to ask. A friend of a friend has apparently bought an avvy, and joined an RP group, and they have some sims. I've been waiting till I see the film before I go and check it out.

I'm sure it is. I saw a Na'vi av at one of the Infohubs a couple of days ago. At a glance it looked pretty true to the promotional stills I've seen.

I saw a Pandora roleplay sim being created. I visited it:

It has some neat things, like those white floaty things, but is mostly still in the development stage. (I think I found that the tree was somewhere between 200 and 300 meters tall)

(that was just a quick grab of a picture, I have clothing that matches the movie more than black bra and those belts; I forgot about what I was wearing when I posted the pic)

Dear Na'vi infringement "designers" The ears are too low. They look stupid. Na'vi ear openings are at the eyebrow line. You have to use a little sculpt magic to conceal the hyuman ears and the ear shape settings adjusted to minimize them but it is easy. Please fix these atrocities. TYVM

A curious footnote in this is that the linguist behind the Na'vi language is trying to promote it as the 'next Klingon.'
- That won't happen unless they find a way to let the fans run loose like trekkies do.

Which makes me wonder how Paramount has managed to protect its trademark while also letting the Trekkies run wild.

The Na'va wiki or language website refers to the movie Avatar as the 'first appearance' of the Na'vi. A bit wishful thinking as the director isn't exactly the sort known for making long series and spinoffs and such.

If fans are lucky, they'll get a book version of the movie.

Any more I find doubtful, but hopefully I'll be wrong.

That said, I took a short tour of the grid today, and found some 3 fully developed Pandora sims where you can play a human, na'vi, or dreamwalker/avatar/etc. One in German, one was always full so I only know of it from what passersby in Na'vi shops told me, and one seemed to be English.

In addition to the ears, another problem with making Na'vi in SL is that they should be 3m tall - roughly 9 feet. That's enough to make a Frankenbarbie look like a child AV.

The sliders just don't go that far.

i found one avatar kit that looks very much like Neytiri..probably the best one i have seen of them all so far..but most look pretty strange so far..

they did a good job on hers

I had someone LM me with an invite to a sim that turned out to be Avatar themed. LOTS of copyright violation content at the LP, along with a sign huffily informing me that I could only be human or Navi, and if I was human I'd have to wear a facemask (which I'd have to buy there). Some of the content was gratuitously over-restricted: no copy/no mod/no transfer type stuff. The irony was thick enough to chew.

I didn't want to look like all other Na'vi in SL so I made myself blonde

and used other stuff made way before "Avatar". Like these eyes, it's from a shop that closed in 2008. I made the shape too, body length and leg length is both set to 100. And set all ear settings to zero and moved the prim ears a bit up. You can hardly notice the default ears with all settings to zero. And remember your feet... they should not be at zero! Mine are 30 here.

I have bow and quiver too, and took a trip into one of the RP sims. Well, I am not tempted to roleplay more in SL, it is too time-consuming, so I just walked around a bit and left quiet. I like to wear this around in SL too. Why not?
