While reading through the notecards from NCI's Land Ownership class, I found this paragraph:

From: someone
Public Land - This doesnt last long, but if an owner
"releases" land, say to avoid land fees, then the land becomes
public, and may be claimed by the first person who sees it.

This is the first I've heard of this. Much of the rest of the card is outdated; is that the case here too or is this still accurate?

(Outdated isn't always bad. I've been following the conversations about how the First Land program should be revised, and it was interesting to learn from this card that one of the frequently suggested revisions -- reserving specific land for each new av who wants it -- has already been tried and found wanting, way back in the Days of Yore.)

Are there general rules or trends about how LL handles abandoned land? I've been keeping an eye on two First-Land plots near me that were apparently abandoned by their owners. One was reclaimed by LL and then rereleased as First Land within a day or two. The second ... the owner was waffling on selling it, then one day I logged in to find it had gone back to the Lindens, but the land description was salespeak that implied it had gone through a reseller before going back to LL. I expected it to be First-Landed again the way the first one was, but it's been about two weeks now and it's still listed as Maintenance.

I think the current process is that any over 511 sqm goes to LL when released. If the plot is a nice 512 plot, it will go to first land, if it is between 512 and 4096 it will be auctioned for L$, if it is over 4096 it will be auctioned for USD. I am not sure on land under 512, but I think it goes public. If there is land that is owned by the Governor, then you can e-mail support to inquire about it.

Land now goes back to Governor Linden when it's abandoned - it used to become public, but that was some time ago now.

House building on small plots ?
03-12-2007 06:11
I am relatively new to SL, and am just thinking about buying / renting a plot to put a small house on for my own use...I am sick and fed up with having to hide in any available shrubbery to change my clothes etc ...and taking off hair by mistake when out in the open is another deeply unattractive sight...so....I know you can be a first lander , or some such thing, and buy a small plot for 512 lds..., but would it be large enough to erect a small house ? I have several such properties given to me in a free box, which I am anxious to use, but am not sure how to go about even getting enough land , and the prim allowances etc .........if anyone could help me , I would be eternally grateful......Oh, and you could you use "idiot speak"..this confused SL resident is pretty much a techno-feeb as yet !!!
Many thanks for any help anyone can give ..
Ps ...Would it be better to buy or rent, in anyones opinion ?

I have built a 3 prim house that fits on a 16sqm plot. No matter how small the area, you could build a house on it.

Hi, Dreamweaver,

512 is more than big enough for a well-made small house, but you'll have to watch your prim usage carefully when it comes to furniture. Personally, I'd advise renting for a while first; then buy when you know better how many prims you'll want.

You do know that LL discontinued the first land program, right? It is no longer possible to buy 512 sq.m. for $512L. The general going rate for 512 lots today is between $6,000 - $7,000.

If that is too much for you to lay out right now, you might consider renting, or buying a smaller plot.

I have seen some decent little houses on 256 sized lots.

Dreamweaver, 512 is big enough for a small house, but be careful. You have to make sure the house will fit as most of the 512 lots I have seen are long and narrow. 1024 works MUCH better both space wise and prim wise. However, its doable. My best advice is to shop around for houses Specifically made for 512 land. Get the "foorprint" of the house i.e. Xm by Ym and that should tell you if it will fit. I dont recall the dimensions of a standard 512 lot, but someone posting in this forum wil probably provide it.

You can find 512 lots going from about 6000 - 9000Ls or higher. Just shop around and find one you like. You may actually just have to look at a bunch of im maps to find the land for sale. The classifieds and land for sale in the search is so polluted with rentals that both searches are basically worthless. I dont even bother withthem any more, except sporadically.

There was about 3000sqm next to me that was abandoned about 6 months ago. I IM'd live help the other day to hassle a linden and found it up for auction within 24 hours and I bought it a few days later.

The narrow 512 lot is 16 m by 32 m. It's frustrating because you really can fit a decent house on a 256 or even an efficiency on a 64, if you don't care about having a yard and the neighboring plots are visually compatible. Spacewise, sizewise, you'd be fine. It's just the goshdarned prims that make such smaller plots unworkable.

I wish I could pay 6000-7000 L for a 512. I seem doomed to paying ~10,000 L, which has been the rate for every plot I've bought since my First Land in December. It's worth it, because these are plots that already adjoin mine, in a sim with a lot of parkland and no major problems, and the other plots I've seen up for sale in this sim and adjoining ones tend to be even more expensive (though the ones in adjoining sims don't actually sell). So I'm willing to pay it -- I'll just grimace while doing it. After this week's purchase, there'll be two more corner plots to make up my 4096, if they ever go on the market. One I absolutely will not pay this much for -- I don't need the extra space that badly.

The other is that abandoned land I mentioned way up at the top. It's been sitting quietly ignored ever since -- although a neighbor in the next sim over has put something called a MindTrick on it, which I'm suspicious of but doesn't seem to be doing any harm. I'll probably bring it to Linden attention next month, after I've recovered from this month's land purchase.

ok so i sold a plot of land to someone....then the next day they accidentally put one of those red fences around it and then abandoned it! So now I am in between two red fences...which is kind of annoying. I'd rather have a neighbor.

Banlines suck.

20x10-12 is a nice footprint for a 16x32 plot of land, though if there's fugly stuff all round, walling yourself in all cosy isn't a bad option either. For prim useage, keeping it around 30 or under is a good idea.

Or you could do what I did and have pretty much nothing on a platform in the sky because your sofa was a club raffle prize and 80 prims :D

I still have that sofa :)
