A little disappointment.......

I don't know how many threads I've started since being here.........not many (5?). That should tell anyone how much this means to me. But, I'm so disappointed over one thing. For 2 years I waited to post in a certain historically long standing thread until it reached a milestone response count of 100,000. Then began my second long wait to the next milestone of 1,000,000 views. With the this forum coming to an end it looks impossible for that to happen...........I'm so sad.

I was going to do that too. I even had a Smart Alec post ready to dump in on the count of 100,000. Unfortunately I was walking the dog.

No, really. I have a dog and I had to take him out for a walk.

Why not create a temporary alt and make a post on the single post thread. I did!

I've been experimenting with how view count works - which views are counted and which are not ...

If I click on a thread I haven't viewed before it goes up one point.
If I click on a thread I have viewed before it doesn't go up, whether there are new posts or not.

I might try relogging then viewing the thread to see if that makes it go up. Perhaps there's a time limit, after which your view is counted again ... anybody know?

Jeez, I'll have so much free time once these forums close!

ETA: No, relogging makes no difference. Either there's a time limit or the view count on The Thread is very impressive indeed and gives some indication of how many people have visited the forum since that thread started ... or is there something else I am missing?

I think the view count is probably somewhat accurate. Most forums I've participated in have little "users online now" statement (for lack of a better discription) near the bottom of the main page. This forum, for whatever reason, does not have that shown (probably some optional thing that LL chose not to display). And that count usually says "in the last 15 minutes". I experimented with that too........and found if you close the forums (you don't have to log off, just leave the forums) for 15 or 20 minutes and come back you'll see the view count increase. I'm pretty sure the view count only updates when it updates the users online. That explains the sometimes apparent randomness. If you check immediately after the count was updated you won't see an increase to the view count until the next update of users online, which could be 15 mins..........or if you check 14 mins after the last update it seems to be almost immediate (or real time).

Geeze, not enough coffee yet........hope that made some sort of sense. :)

Anyway.........just over 82,000 to go...............hurry, hurry!!! :)

The number of users online is shown at the top of the "who's online" page.

I've been known to overlook the obvious. But I don't see a "who's online" at the top (or bottom) of any page. It's not important........and doesn't change what I think is happening with the view count.

I see a "newest member", total members, who's birthday......those are at the bottom of the first page. That is usually where I've found the "who's online now". But, I'll go back to drinking more coffee. :)

It is in the "Quick Links" drop down menu.

Using that welcome info I've just counted that there are 140 people on the forum at this very moment.

Huh, bet there aren't that many folk spread throughout all the other forums (fora?) put together.

And they're getting rid of this?

Madness!

You know, this is getting old. I started this thread for fun..........there are plenty of threads started over the last few days where comments and posts such as this are appropriate and, even, encouraged. I wanted this to be an exception.........something not earth shattering, sad, or in any way accusatory to the people in charge of forums/blogs/features/non-features. I was hoping this thread would be different.......have fun with it or ignore it. But, I should have known.

Keep it up and I'll see if I can't get someone to close it, lock it or even delete it.

And many wonder why LL is so reluctant to give us the freedom we want so bad......some of us are not mature enough for that responsibility. Adults? Act like it.

What would happen if you created your account from a different place such as at friend's house or the library or some such?

Don't know.....depends on how many times your friend lets you view the thread or the library allows, I suppose. :)
