Sorry, I am pretty new and I am not sure of the exact definition of
"griefing". What does it mean exactly? Bothering someone? Trespassing
on private property?

Griefing is pretty much any behavior that causes another placer, err, grief. AKA a pest and a pain in the butt.

its a very broad term that can mean many things, OFTEN, ppl say other users are greifing them when what they are doing is not really greifing but more or less annoying the person.

Griefing would be : someone who comes to you event and releases 1000 flying walking sound effect generating peni's onto your land to annoy and greif you.

Not Greifing would be : You set you land so anyone can build or anyone can terraform and they come and they build or terraform.

Griefing would be : someone comes up to you in a non-combat area and shoots you or puts you in a cage

Greifing would be : someone who comes into your store and puts clear boxes over your vendors so people can not buy things by sliding them in from another lot that has build allowed on it

Greifing would be : your nayber builds a device that shoot particles all over you land from there land or builds prims that hang into your land with the direct intent to disturb you.

From the Police Blotter it seems that Griefing can also be done on your own land you own, ive seen police reports that says ppl got in trouble for having textures that say things mean about the naybers.

Anyone who tries to make you unhappy could be considered a Griefer.

Anyone who tries to make you happy is called a ungriefer.

a griefer is a person that derives pleasure from making the people around him miserable.

It is griefing - unless you have put up some notice indicating that you intend the land to be a sandbox for building and/or terraforming.

People make mistakes, or have a reason to let specific people build on their land.
Yes, it is possible to use the Group mechanism to ensure that griefers can't mess with your land. However, the fact that you would have to jump through those hoops illustrates clearly that we *are* talking about griefing.

You can call that griefing if you want - and in many cases it technically is, but Linden Lab provides the tools necessary for residents to prevent such behavior. If they don't use those tools, they shouldn't expect any punitive action against the perpetrator.

Many people would judge actions based on intent.
The particular action discussed in the last few posts above implies a lack of respect for others and an intent on the part of the perpetrator to mess with other peoples enjoyment of SL. It's infantile behaviour. It's griefer mentality. All negative, no positive.

We shouldn't expect that ordinary people will understand the technicalities. Look elsewhere in the forums for many examples of people having difficulties with land and group permissions.

The griefing involved is not restricted to the innocent plot owner, who might just get discouraged and leave the land sitting as is. The neighbours in the sim are left with the mess in their midst. SL is littered with such places.

The perpetrators who leave such mess in their trail are sociopaths and parasites. They should clean up their act (literally), or they should undergo "attitude adjustment".
