Hi,
I am wondering whether the green chat messages i get that are generated by a script can be read by people near me as well.
Or are they private messages to me?

Depends.
If the object says 'whisper' it can be either you only, or right next to you, almost on top of you.
If it has no whisper, it's general chat range.

hi, thanks for the prompt reply.
so even in my own home there is no guarantee of 100% privacy. Many objects don't 'whisper' and are in fact very rude! hehe

Pretty much. Privacy in SL has been a LONG and HOT debated topic and there's really nothing to give it at this time. The rude items, if you can mod them, you might ask a scripted how to give a whisper command. If you can't mod them, you can ask the creator to replace your script with a whisper.

If the text is meant only for the object's owner, then the scriptor should have used the llOwnerSay() function, and then only you as the owner could see the green text.
Otherwise, text that is whispered can be heard by anyone within 10 meters from the object, which is still quite a distance!!!
General chat text can be heard up to 20 meters away.
Shouted text can be heard up to 100 meters away.
