Has anyone heard of that? A friend said our said we got hit by a copybot as we saw something like dd16, dd 24, etc., but the person said to boost rezzing... I've never heard of it before.

It's not a bot. Emerald allows shortcut commands in the chat bar, dd is its shortcut to change the draw distance.
If you saw the dd commands in chat, that would have been someone trying to use the Emerald shortcuts in a different viewer that doesn't work the same way, probably just out of habit. |

and it's a fallacy anyway. psychological. when your draw distance is changed, it redraws the entire scene. so, it really is not speeding anything up. what does work is lowering the draw and leaving it low so that you only load things that close to you. however sometimes what does also happen is that while doing the stepping up of draw, if you started at a higher distance like say 128, then dropped to 24 and start stepping, some of the things will already be in your cache and so will indeed reappear on screen faster.

Lance is right.
If I'm trying to see a merchandise vendor 4m away and my viewer is trying to rez every prim within 128m I can give the command "dd 6" and my target will rez one hell of a lot sooner than if I let the viewer continue to rez things in the next room/parcel/region at random, and that is no fallacy. ... and BTW it is not a gesture, just a command typed in open chat. _____________________

we are not exactly talking about the same thing. yes, you will see the things closer to you faster, if you reduce your draw and leave it reduced. i said so in my post "what does work is lowering the draw and leaving it low so that you only load things that close to you." but in the main, my post was talking about the practice of reducing and then stepping back up a few meters at a time, which is what the OP saw someone doing.
as for Henri's viewer i have no idea but in Emerald, which is the one named in the topic, here is Phox's own post when a similar feature was suggested to be included, of auto-dropping draw then gradually stepping it up after teleporting: Doing this actually INCREASES loading time, though it may not appear that way since the objects close to you tend to be downloaded first. Every time you change your drawdistance objects are loaded again, we will not be adding any similar functionality to Emerald. the whole thread: http://modularsystems.sl/index.php?option=com_agora&task=topic&id=1498 and there are gestures around that do that, that when triggered they drop the draw then incrementally increase it. it basically started, best i can tell, when someone made and sold an 'Emerald Speed Rezzer' on Xstreet and that is what it did, and people started making their own gestures to do it and passing them around. and it appears that what the OP saw was someone triggered such a gesture that either was not using Emerald, or that had disabled the chat command function. _____________________

But ... but ... but ... EVERYTHING we don't understand is OBVIOUSLY COPYBOTTING!! Not to forget that everyone knows the way to stop it is to yell 'quit' over and over again. ![]() Curses! Foiled again! If only I remembered not to listen to everyone on channel 0 for an obvious command ... _____________________

If only I remembered not to listen to everyone on channel 0 for an obvious command ... "!quit" actually =) "dd: random" and "dd: < insert some name here>" also happen to be commands for Stargates from the Cleary Network (no defunct it seems) and stands for "direct dial" _____________________

What you're seeing is a gesture based tool for quicker rezzing. But it only works in emerald. The person is trying to use it on the normal sl viewer, thats why the commands are just showing up in chat. They wouldn't show if the user had emerald.
BTW i sell a rezzer for 50L$ on slx |
