Well, shoot, it is not at all what I expected it to be. I have met a few friendly people, had a look around, but trying to find a nice friendly place to chat, play games or what ever, is impossible. Forget about buying any land, the big time users grab it up and charge outrageous use fees and then you can lose it in a few days by squatters and just rude ugly people.
So, I guess my question really is, before I leave and uninstall, can I just give what $L to the few friends I have made?
And how hard is it going to be to get Linden to quit charging my credit card?
This idea seemed like a good idea, but the gamblers, land barons, kids and rude people are just ruining it for everyone.

Yes, you can click on their names in your friends list and just 'pay' each av what you wish to give them. As for having LL quit charging your card, once you delete the account they shouldnt charge you on the next billing date but I'd check my statement to make sure.

Watch out if you pre-paid for any amount of months... LL does NOT give refunds!
But maybe you should stick around a bit longer, it's bound to get easier for you. Dealing with things in SL sometime takes a bit of patience and work. Depends on if you think the result is worth or not I guess.

Land Barons are having a hard time now with all the new land that's up...it won't be easy for them with all the casino land that'll be for sale now that gambling's banned. I'm looking forward to this so I can add to my land and be able to build things without the ridiculous prices I had been used to.
Kids are everywhere. I don't like it, either.
Yeah you can give your friends all your money and transferrable items. Just downgrade your account and remove your credit card info from your account info and you should be set. I used to do that every summer before I started my own store.

It's really sad to see someone post something like this...even moreso because it contains quite a bit of truth. If it weren't for the *people* I've met, here...and the generosity of those who took the time to help me learn a few things as a noob - the client would've ended in my trash file LONG ago.
My "First Land" experience was a nightmare of howling, shrieking "virtual realtors", all of whom either sidled up to me, greasy-skinned and eye shining to whisper "I'll buy your land from you...big boy," or SHOUTED "Sell me your land for good profit!"
My first parcel was soon surrounded by banlines...and gigantic, wooden megaprims.
And when I didn't *have* land...I was constantly griefed and orbited and harrassed in sandboxes.
So...it's sad to hear that you'll be leaving, Oldman...I'm sure you'll be missed...but I can understand your decision, completely. And paying your friends the balance of your Lindens is a nice gesture...sure to be appreciated.

I guess you must be playing in a parallel universe version of SL ? There was and is plenty of land for sale. I have never had problems buying land. When you own the land, any so called squatters are just a click ban away.... I'm sorry your experience wasn't the best. Good luck with whaterever future venture you decide on.

Their are idiots in SL but they mostly hang out in the places I avoid so no problem for me. I'm not sure what you want out of SL but for me its all about meeting and talking with people who like to have fun here. I go to places that don't tolerate idiots and where everyone is happy to help. I live on a beach that is miles from the main land, a beautiful island that I'd recommend to anyone looking for a peaceful and friendly retreat.

This idea seemed like a good idea, but the gamblers, land barons, kids and rude people are just ruining it for everyone. Land prices aren't that bad right now...($5500 per 512m) use fees? If you buy the land then all you are paying in use fees goes to Linden Labs. 512 meters is still free in use fees...If you buy any more than you are paying something like $5 per month Squatters? right click on your land choose about land/objects/refresh button...anything not owned by you can be returned with a click and another few clicks can have that "squatter" banned from your land forever. Ugly walls all around you? people wandering onto your land in their quest for the fountain of youth? toss yourhouse up into the sky...you'll have unlimited sunset views. spend some time...learn the interface....don't leave...we need more poeple like you who actually care about quality of life in SL

I don't think the problems are overwhelming. Buying 512m of land isn't expensive - compare it to the cost of buying 2 or 3 CDs or a subscription to a magazine - it's really not that expensive! How much does a Lego set, a model railway station or a Barbie house cost in RL? How much does a graphics software package or PS3 game cost? Rude people in SL are like water off a duck's back to me - they are just a minor irritation. I encountered one the other day and I just muted him!

There are plenty of other multiplayer games besides SL. Try Battlefield 2 for a change. Check out http://www.blackopsmercenaries.us/index.php . they have a great mod of the game. Plus you get to hang out with a great group of people.

I don't think it's a matter of problems being "overwhelming"...as much as they are an almost regular occurrence. They've become a constant, irritating whine in the background that just plain gets OLD after a while.
Griefers are never really banned...they simply return as one alt after another. Your nice plot of land in the virtual "countryside" of the mainland will probably never remain nice and pretty once your neighbors build...whatever it is that's lurking behind those megaprims. "Protecting" your property can be just as much an irritation to your neighbors as it is a comfort to you (ban lines, landscape textures on megaprims, etc...). And setting up home on an island is just adding an extra layer of complication to their SL experience.
SL, for those looking for social interaction, is more often a noisy, crowded, and stunningly jarring experience for the newly-arrived. Noob avatars are very often treated with some disdain...and suspicion...sometimes for good reason, most of the time just out of exasperation.
If you keep with it...you *might* find what you're looking for. But it takes more perserverance than some people are willing to invest in an "entertainment" experience.

Why not just downsize your SL commitment - sell some of your land or and just explore and chat or go and help newbies on Orientation Island - it might not be very exciting but it makes one feel one's presence in SL is worthwhile.

As soon as I sell the rest of my land I'm gone too, If it don't sell for a decent price so I can make my money back by the time my fee's are do then I'll take a loss and sell cheap! Besides not being able to have a nice piece of land without someone putting up an AD Farm next to me, ( I want a nice green piece of Land, I don't want just a view of the sky everyday!) There is always some sort of problem, My PayPal not being excepted anymore, Just plain RUDE People I always have to deal with, and a lot of other things! It's just not fun and exciting for me anymore!

SL is like RL, but more so. And that is a good and bad thing. If you're completely set on leaving there's not much can be done, but if you're interested, there are still some great sims out there with fantastic folks. You usually just have to get away from the mainland and things improve dramatically property wise too. Best wishes!

Personally, my first land purchases have been great, only problem is I am running our of prims where I am building. Most builds where I am are wonderful to mediocre and it's a mainland PG sim. I do have a mega prim wall behind me, but I don't have to face it, so it's a small issue, oh yeah and the ad farm in the sim beside me, but eh, not going to move because of a few wrinkles, much less leave. Beside me and my neighbor try to keep the area as ban line free as possible. We prefer to use good land setting choices over ban lines and it works well for us. Of course we get newbies and people flying over or checking our places out, I usually invite my "guests" up the the deck for a friendly chat. I am actually looking at buying one more 512 plot in my sim for a prim farm so I can put some more fancy furniture in my place.
Social spots? I know of at least on great social spot, The Pier. People that frequent the pier are great! I am pretty much The Pier misfit but I could not care less as I am treated no different. The place was so great I decided to make my DJing debut their and they loved it. If no one is around at any given point in time I enjoy the water slide, or the hanggliders or the diving board, even the RC Car track. The way I look at it is, if this place exists there must be other great social spots to.
I guess if you find SL really is not the place for you, then that is fine. But maybe you just have not given it enough time to find what you are looking for, or maybe you are looking in the wrong places?

It's so sad you are leaving becuz of rude people, there are so many great things in SL to see, and do. Also so many great people, to me, outnumbers the annoyances. The city I've been working on, is a peaceful retreat, with beach, forest, castle, etc. just a place for anyone to hang out. You're more than welcome to hang there anytime, and I know there are so many other places like it, smiles.
