SL vanishes... any ideas?

So i wait patiently with everyone else while SL opened tonight, logged in and experienced serious lag.... crawled around for half an hour or so then SL crashed.

So i go to launch it again and that time, and everytime since, it gets to the final stage of loading... (if not sooner) and the whole client vanishes without a trace. no crash message, no 'something unexpected has happened' message... nothing... any ideas?

I have reinstalled sl, tried different regions, am running the latest version *shrugs* what do you suggest?

Thanks in advance :-))

It happens, Every Wednesday, Has done for the last Three years with variable levels of severity, probably will for the next three, People should be used to it by now. I usually take wednesdays to do RL things, and by Just working my schedule around the Known trouble days, i never really Miss anything.

This is just a guess, and a bold one at that possibly subjecting myself to some forum ridicule.

I have no clue as to your Graphics card or computer system but perhaps your client has somehow become "VBO Enabled" when it shouldn't be. At least it's worth a shot.

Double-click your client and let it detect your hardware and bring-up its log-on screen but **do NOT log-on**

Next, click the "Preferences" button and navigate to the "Adv. Graphics" tab where you will find the "Enable VBO" checkbox. If checked, un-check and try again. If unchecked, consider re-booting your computer.

Lastly, either watch this thread for other possible suggestions or go buy a can of bug spray and fog the area around your tower.

When doing an uninstall and reinstall, the folder in document and settings that contains the cache and other goodies is not deleted and recreated. You have to do this manually. So this is one more thing you should try. No need to reinstall, just delete everything in that second life folder and it will rebuild when you start up the game.

Ain't complacency a wonderful thing?

Sky,

I hope you get it fixed, when you restart, does it tell you it crashed the last time?

You might also try the Nicholaz viewer

http://nicholaz-beresford.blogspot.com/

It is a vast improvement over the standard LL version (amazing one guy working part time can fix so many things LL can't seem to).

If I am seeing right Sky says they reinstalled but does not say they uninstalled.

Thus you might try uninstalling if you haven't done so already.

This is a very low probability idea, but it is is easy and takes no brain power, which is always a nice property of fixit ideas: try turning the computer all the way off. I have had video problems of a never-figured-out nature which went away upon turning the computer off - not just a restart, as dead as it can go.

:-(

Ive waited a further 6 hours, i have cleared the cache, reinstalled (and uninstalled sl) my pc has been off, stone cold for 6 hours.

......... running out of ideas :-(

I tried the alternative viewer which was recommended, but it wont run coz of a missing xul.dll and i have no idea what or where that is or what to do with it if i had it.

.... any more suggestions?

Thanks x

Hmm.. after further investigation

We have 2 decent PCs in the house.... both refuse to run my main avi (see above symptoms, always the same) ... but both will load in with my alt easily.

But i dont like my alt, it has no life, i want to keep it in the celler where it belongs....

Does this shed anymore light?

Thanx

Well that could narrow it down a touch.... so the client is working.. your alt has ziltch in its inventory, probably doesnt have HUD's, AO's, Bling, Flexi, 10,000 items + in its inventory.... lives in a basement appartment with his parents, eats pizza (lol j/k) You have tried manually clearing out the cache folders.. running a registry cleaner... defraged your harddisc... cold booted your router (assuming you use one)...

hmm, registry cleaner and defragging hard disk ..... but wouldnt that suggest it was my system at fault... yet the other 2 PCs i tried it on (yes 3 machines now) give precisely the same result?

I guess I can try it, but for all three systems to have the same registry fault etc would be a little coincidental wouldnt it? .... Im no PC expert so I honestly dont know, im just guessing

*sighs*
TY for all of your help so far :-)

Oh and yeah... that pretty much sums up my alt.... and that hes a bloke, i dont wanna be a bloke! .... he had a tiiiiny use once... now hes next to useless

One issue that can prevent you logging in successfully is corrupt caches, the DB index can become out of sync with the asset server.. and we all know how easliy SL looses things...

With defragging, LL themselves say it makes things run smoother and I whole heartedly agree.. there are 1,000's of small files (and big ones) in the cache. When I run defrag, then load SL, play for an hour, logout and run defrag again, it spends 90% of its time in the SL cache. For me, I don't get a lot of the issues many do, and my system runs smoothly. The NTFS (Next Technology File System) was supposed to be a much cleaner system to the old Fat32/16 systems, and many believe it doesn't require defragging (a common myth).

Running a registry cleaner is always a good thing as it removes broken links, refreshes the entries, which is a good thing when you install update software over an existing software programme. It can also help define programmes which you have uninstalled that still leave its entries intact in the registry. The function of the registry, is essentially a database and has largely taken over from the 'system.ini, boot.ini' and even the 'ini' folder in the windows main folder. Being a DB, it can become unweildly and bloated. It is loaded and searched by the OS which will slow down your strart up of many programmes including the OS itself.

It's hard to forgive Microsoft for not making defrag and registry cleaners automated functions, which can work on the fly. You can buy 3rd party programmes that will do that... Diskeeper is one (the defrag in Windows is a cutdown version, which does not have the automated function). I'll bet you find a minimum of 20+ issues with your registry when you run it. Even virus type programmes can hide entries in the registry....
