Ok, so i understand how the behaviour, building, and appearance ratings work.

But what does the given one mean?

my profile says i have been given 3 but i fdont know why or what for.

Can i find out?

Also i have heard you can negatively rate someone, is that possible and how?

given means how many ratings someone has handed out as opposed ot recieved.

Negitive ratings were removed from the game

And some people who loved to neg rate have blissfully gone off pouting.

The ratings system in many online communities are deeply flawed at their base. The inability to give negative ratings renders the ratings system in SL useless and wasteful on the resources of SL. Best thing to do with the ratings system is either redesign it to include a negative feedback system or scrap it totally

for those too new to remember negative ratings - those didnt work either.

People used negative ratings as Drama weapons. Was one individual very infamous around here who neg rated people he argued with on the forums, for example.

Was another infamous sex hater who neg rated people in building , apearance AND behaviour for "dressing like a slut" she gave out thousands of neg rates.

People would even make gangs of alts to nail someone with a lot of neg rates all at once.

Since most non-trouble makers had no neg rates; anyone who was ganged up on like that was assumed to be a greifer at first, until people realized what was going on.

I was neg rated once for making a bad pun comparing Slingo to Ringo in the beatles.

Any ratings system good or bad can not be better quality than the users who employ it.

Good ratings will be a popularity contest. Bad ratings will be a weapon.

I don`t think you are old enought to make such remarks about rates love.
Well they are not as deeply "FLAWED" as you say........ FYI Negative rates were taken out because there was gang attacks of people playing hurtful games. In general hun rates do have there place on Second Life History and should remain for awhile long.

why does it say i have given 3?

I have never rated anyone before, thought about it once then realise it would cost me to do so.

As someone who is old enough to remember ratings bonuses, neg / drama rates, and ratings parties, I say the system was completely flawed, deeply flawed. Rates only cost L$1 each, were given out for no reason, and people were neg rated just because their choice of clothing didn't suit someone.

Then LL took away neg rates, raised the price of rates from L$1 to L$25, and took away ratings bonuses (okay, i might have the price hike and removal of bonuses in the wrong order). There was also supposed to be a system in place that would cause rating points to drop off after 6 months, but that seems forgotten because they don't mean anything. They are worthless and are not a true measure of anything in my opinion. Save your L$'s for upload costs.

As for the original question, your profile in SL doesn't show any rates given or received, so I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Age is not an indication of wisdom, and flawed ratings systems didnt start with SL. the inablity to give a negative rating to someone is much like only having one name on a ballot

As I said if they cant redesign it, they should scrap it, its useless right now

Maybe a tip for you and others... The seconds life website has an excellent knowledge base, that answer questions like this. The knowledge base can be found here:

You just gave me an idea. Since the rating system now is basically a sign that says "Look at me! Lots of people have rated me well!" or "Look at me! All of my alts which I transfered Linden dollars to have rated me highly.", why not just do away with the whole system. It is as easily manipulated as First Land was. So, I figure that with that gone from everyone's profiles, maybe lag will be reduced. It can be another measure taken by Linden Labs to reduce in world lag from unnecessary features such as the online symbol on screen names in searches. Perhaps a trip to Feature Suggestions is in order.

I disagree - although I do agree in the sense that when I look at someone's profile and see they have hundreds of positive ratings, all I think is 'they've been around for a while'. But although seeing the 'score' is meaningless to me, I still think the act of rating someone is a nice thing to do. I think it's a good way of telling someone you appreciate something about them or something they've done. I know I'm always quite touched when someone rates me.

I tend to forget it's possible to rate people, which I think is a shame - every time a thread like this pops up I think "Yeah, I must remember to rate the awesome people from now on".

And then forget by the end of the week.

ratings basically are already gone - they only exist now as a money sink. They dont mean anything.

Linden Labs should keep them till that day in the future when they redesign the profile. Then they can scrap them.

And how do you know he hasn't? Maybe not in Second Life, but as was mentioned, ratings systems aren't exclusive to Second Life. And perhaps you could stop with the "hun" stuff. It's condescending and unnecessary.

Ratings are worth keeping even though they are essentially meaningless because they provide a way express a positive opinion about someone. Yes, it is sad that we can't visibly log a negative opinion, but as others have said, there is a reason for that (one of our favorite neg raters used to run around neg rating Mentors, just because they were Mentors..) I do think that the cost should be lowered again so that newer players can participate without spending a fortune. I know that since we started discussing ratings again here in the forums over the past month or so, people have started rating each other again - I've gotten two in the past week, so for people who are willing to spend $25L, it is coming back as a way of expressing appreciation.
