Special tier benefits

I know that at one time, very early on, LL asked people to make a - not that small - contribution in exchange for a lifetime of 4096m² tier.

A few times now, I've come across people that seemed to have a different kind of benefit though (around 1024-1536m² free tier?) for accounts somewhere in the late half of 2005?

Was there actually any kind of benefit back then for whatever reason? I don't want to debate the fair or unfair of it, but I am curious what the historical background is :).

I was here then, and there wasn't any kind of a special deal then. The only one I know about is that lifetime membership and free tier they offered way back to the very first players, for $200 and something, I think.

'free tier' Are we talking free unlimited tier because if so that puts the rest of us paying users at a slight disadvantage to those early pioneers.

Thankies, Cocoanut :). I guess I'll bug them a bit with questions then :p. One was adament she can own 1024m² without paying either premium or tier fees (and she's not a charter member) so I thought she was just confused then, but then I came across someone I didn't know that well to question about it, making the same kind of claim. Odd :o.

The lifetime accounts (charter members?) got/get 4096m² of "free" tier, but I think they were asked to pay $250 for it, which seems like an awful good deal now, but at the time I think the situation was that noone even knew if SL would still be around the next week.
I don't think I would have gambled away $250 in the same position so while I can wish I had it, I don't feel bad about it, because they did take a risk :).

I didn't with my charter aged Toon. I remember actually laughing with my wife about it. Of course TSO and There were the rage then. :D

There are people out there that do have "free tier." I don't know the story behind why they got it, but they do. Most of the ones that I know about have 512-1536 sqm of free tier. I also know that there was one account that was given a free upgrade to lifetime as a prize for a stress test.
