For those of you that have been suffering constant or intermittent disk thrashing, a fix is on its' way:

https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-733

Seems the texture cache is using far RAM more than necessary.

Good News!

A fix is in the works!

I had a little trouble understanding the technical specifications on that link.

As a temporary fix, would it make sense to put in the Preferences option in Second Life that my memory card has less onboard RAM that it actually does?

I'll believe it when I see it... and it works... and it manages to work beyond more than one update cycle.

I don't want anything that's going to make texture loading even slower - but that said, I may have mis-read this entry. I have 2 GB RAM (with 256 graphics memory in the Nvidia 7900) and textures are still slow to load many times (particularly AV textures: skins, clothing, particularly jacket layer). Will this change affect those of use with plenty of RAM in a negative way? I had reported on the memory leak too BTW.

But is there a fix for the things that "the Fix" will break, in the works also?

If this works is it going to make textures rez quicker or slower? And is it going to give people back the ability to chose which rezzes first be zooming in on it? I miss being able to do that so much :(

I have a 512mb system with 128mb video card and was experiencing this. I have set the Graphics Card Memory to only 16mb in the preferences menu and this seems to have stopped the thrashing. Before I did this Secondlife.exe was showing a memory footprint of 533mb, but is now down to a more reasonable 390mb. This has had no visible effect on the speed atwhich textures load as far as I can see so far. I'm still experiencing some thrashing, but it is of a more sedate volume now :D
