Ok, this is actually a cool program from the libSL group. Its a client that lets you log into SL and IM, check your inventory, and chat with people without a graphical interface.

Now, the program *works*. Its not polished and isn't feature complete by any means. However, if you are in a situation where you can't get into SL but are able to run the client, then it can be good for you.

Couple of things:
1) You CANNOT be logged in with both SLeek and SL.
2) If you are logged into SLeek and then log into SL, you will be logged out of SLeek. SLeek will then FREEZE SOLID. Cntl-alt-del and end-task after that.
3) When you are logged in, your avatar will appear to other people where you left it. Shouldn't be a big problem, but if you are concerned make sure you park your virtual butt somewhere you won't be bothered.

I am the technology director for my company and my pc was *completely* up to date. This being said, I was still not able to install SLeek without updating the .Net framework from Microsoft.

You should be able to install the update without having to reboot your computer. At least I didn't.

1) Download the .Net 2.0 update from Microsoft http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=0856eacb-4362-4b0d-8edd-aab15c5e04f5&displaylang=en
2) Download SLeek http://delta.slinked.net/programming/sleek/

If you are in a work situation where you cannot and/or are not allowed to install software, then DON'T. If you were working for me and you did, your continued employment for the company would be very short indeed. (I get to for research purposes.)

Enjoy, but thank the libSL folks, not me.

SLeek uses the libsecondlife.dll file, which changes more often than SL goes down or malfunctions.

Just kidding, no dll file could possibly change that rapidly.

However, when the libsecondlife.dll file does change, what does a user do to update SLeek?

Nice thought... but what guarantee is there that somewhere inside it is something that sends password details back to you, or someone else, enabling our accounts to be hacked?

That's the one issue that really concerns me about any 'third party' SL clients that require login details. Can we really trust that unknown user?

I don't know the people who wrote any of the programs I use, such as the Windows operating system, Second Life, mIRC, Opera, Firefox, CorelDraw, SnagIt, etc. Any of these programs could be doing bad stuff, but I use them anyway.

One can download the source code for SLeek and compile it for their own self. If you don't know how to read the code, ask someone that does to compile it and send you the files you need to run it. You can't do that with most programs people use.

1) Compile the source code yourself. It's an open source client and you can have someone audit the source code or audit it yourself if there is a risk.

2) Use an alt account. Don't give the alt any privileged access to groups or a L$ balance, and there won't be anything to lose if the account was compromised.

To answer your question though, no you can't trust people who hand you random software. You need to take proactive steps to ensure your safety online.

If the program is made to true Open Source standards, I have no doubt about it. I mean, do you suspect Firefox, Thunderbird or Open Office of such things you mention?

And no, I don't know that much about it all.... but I was an evening "lectured" by someone who knows very well where she is talking about. Even got a t-shirt from her saying "The Future is Open".
