Don't know where else to post this and am not getting any response from LL - I am an educator and a counselor, affiliated with three colleges. I want to do some work in SL (research, social services, education, counseling) and ordered a Private Island using the special form. Joined SL as a Premium Member, got the tax ID numbers from two of the colleges, contact info, notified my bank, even came up with a nifty prospectus, and sudmitted it all on the special PI form as directed. Nothing. No response at all; no charge made to my bank. No "we got the order, now just wait a bit"; "we got the order, you don't qualify unless you are the college dean"; "we got but we are so backed up we can't get to it yet"; or even "what order?" Any of the above would at least tell me where the process is going and what I should do next - wait, re-order, submit more documentation, or ??? If anyone here has purchased a PI using the special form for educational institutions or 501c3 organization, were you able to make the purchase even though you did not OWN the 501c3 or run the college? Are they just incredibly backlogged? We'd like to start research work in the Spring semester which starts...tomorrow . I am totally okay in any delay in the island set-up, it's the absence of any response at all despite a dozen emails, calls, IMs to LL. Thanks for any suggestions! <edit - typo>

From: Avalon Burke Anyone bought an island for educational purposes? I doubt anyone is paying US$295 a month Land Tier for an education island. Unless the tuition is enough to cover it

From: Alexis Starbrook I doubt anyone is paying US$295 a month Land Tier for an education island. Unless the tuition is enough to cover it That's true, they probably aren't. There is a different rate for educators and 501c3 organizations, and there are a number of people in-world doing research, teaching, etc. You do have to be able to verify your work and affiliation with a RL institution. The American Cancer Society is there, for example, as are a number of RL universities (USC comes to mind). I hope more social service and educational endeavors can find a home in SL. The Lindens must also, since they have subgroups for us, mailing lists, etc. As for our tier and land costs, it's more looking at grant funding and partnerships than tuition. There is a lot of good info in the education and business sections here, including descriptions of the work already being done. Cool stuff. Unfortunately, what they don't tell you is how to get LL to answer your emails or phone calls, so my question was not so much about the feasibility of doing research, education, and social services in SL - that's a done deal. I was asking about the LL admin part of the process in case anyone has been through that and has words of wisdom to share

If you're still waiting on a phone call back, try contacting one of the Linden Concierges inworld - Jack, Cyn or Fritz Linden would be good to start with. They're there to act as reps for LL for largescale (a sim or more) landowners. Since you're looking into purchasing an island, they'd be able to help you with what specific info you need to additionally send (although it sounds like you hit all those bases already with your application).
LL's in the middle of a huge backlog of sim orders still. I agree that some sort of acknowledgement that your order was placed is absolutely necessary, but you should probably prepare yourself for a few week wait for delivery. Any of the above Lindens should be able to help you more as you wait for a response, hopefully.
Good luck with your project!

My mom, (bless her heart) sent me an article from the New York Times education magazine (1/7) about several educators conducting classes in sl. I don't have time right now, but I can list names and institutions mentioned in the article if you would like to try and contact them. The article is on page 22 and is titled "Pepperdine In a Treehouse" by Christine Lagorio.

Avalon, are you on the SLED list? ( https://lists.secondlife.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/educators) You might try asking there. Also, have you emailed Pathfinder Linden directly? (his email address and an invitation to email him with questions is on the SLED list page) Pathfinder leads on support for the education/academic/research initiatives ( http://pathfinderlinden.com/)

Cory, Sylvia, Razitra - thank you all so much! Am following through on each suggestion, and on my way in-world right now to try Pathfinder Linden as well.
