If someone is bugging you (not necessarily harassing) can you put them on "ignore" or something so they cannot IM or see your status? I don't want to set my status for no one to see, just certain people.

Talon DeCuir You can mute them. (open up their profile and select the mute button) If they are on your friends list, you can set it so they cannpt see you on the map or online. I don't know of any more.

There was some guy advertising that claimed he could have people "Taken Care Of" but I don't know what happened with that.

Out of curiousity, what does the muted party see if you mute them and they try to IM you?
I've had a similar problem with a guy on the beach that is just very straightforward and insistent that he is the perfect SL soulmate for me (rolling eyes). Even when I TP'd my good (male) friend in to give him a talking to, he was still ignorant of his very rude behavior.
It's not something I want to push to a higher level or anything, but the guy was really getting on my nerves. Plus, he hangs around my favorite beach now and shows up as soon as I get comfy in my favorite lounger.

Mute me and I will see what happens

Unless things have changed, if someone on your mute list im's you, they don't get any response, no indication that they are muted. BUT if they try to pass inventory to you, it is immediately declined. What i don't exactly remember is if it goes into YOUR trash or stays in their inventory when you've muted them, i think it used to go into your trash (so you still get whatever they were trying to give you). At any rate, you'll get a chat line that says something to the effect that "you have declined whatever-it-is from so-and-so"
it is quite effective. The only downside is they can still contact you here if you don't mute/ignore them here. i'm not sure if that will limit them being able to see your instant messenger information if you included that in your forums profile.
It's been my experience that once you mute them in SL then ignore them in the forums, if they want to stalk you bad enough, they'll just create another logon and start over. When that happens, if it becomes bad enough, the Lindens MIGHT step in and provide some relief, but DO NOT expect it. They've become more and more "hands off" for petty stuff, but if it got bad enough, they might help.

Thanks Cessee. Fortunately, this pest doesn't have enough brain cells to try to find me. Hasn't tried to offer friendship and hasn't found the IM button yet, from what I can tell.
I just found a nicer beach (with nicer people) and settled down there, instead.

Just as a reminder.... even when you have muted someone or changed your friendlist so that they cannot see your online status, there are tools that checks directly your online status and shows it no matter what.
If someone is really bothering, remove them from your friendlist.... For me my friendlist is for those I really like and who can understand that I am not always in the mood for chatting or for company.

Here's a question I've had in the past.
I know there are tools that can be used to check online status, no matter what. They've been used against my old account by a specific person I was trying to avoid, when she could no longer use conventional methods of finding me. But here's the weird part. Often, when I'd log in, I'd find her appearing at places I was, usually trying to hide or quickly tping in and then out. At first I thought it was a fluke, maybe we'd been there together, and she just guessed... But as time went on, I started going to new places that we'd never been together, and she would still appear when I was there.
I was always very specific to not have any mutual friends on my list. So how the heck did she manage to track me despite?? How could she map me??

if you hide your online status from a friend, they can still see if you're online by joining a group you're in and finding your name in the members list. it will either say "ONLINE" or your last login date will be published. if paranoid 'friend' then contacts you and says zOMG YOU'RE HIDING FROM ME, either tell them the truth or pretend the damn friend's list is b0rked again.

well .. heres how you avoid people (when the system is working)
Progression 1 1. Tell them to F-off and have a nice second life. 2. Mute Them 3, Quit all the groups that you both belong to. Dont join any open enroll groups. 4. Make sure all of your picks dont actually take people to any parcels you spend time on. 5. Dont go to any clubs the person knows you used to go to. 6. Tell all mutal aquaintances and anone who will listen the mutee is a total scum and why - make stuff up if you have to. 7. Start spamming their private land with prim junk.
Progression 2 1. Make an alt account 2 Dont tell anyone about your alt. 3. Take up sone unusual thing that takes you far away from your old haunts - Gor, Star Trek, Tiddlywinks... 4. Never look back

I tried hiding by blending into the scenery as a potted plant once. Didn't work so well - people tend to notice and comment on it when potted plants get up and walk around. Maybe next time I'll try being a rock and just stay still.

From: Obadiah Paravane If you do all that your entire SL is devoted to avoiding people. If you have to take it that far you might as well quit. That's not true. I'm an alt, created out of a need to avoid people. My daily life in Second Life isn't devoted to avoiding these people. That doesn't make it so you have to spend every day avoiding these people.

everybody guessed my alt because he/she (yeah, so my alt is ambiguous ) was always on my land and in a couple of the same groups, so i just told my friends that if I'm logged in as my alt, it means I don't want to be disturbed. if they then disturb me, they get a verbal slapping. i try to do *everything* as my main, but unfortunately it's just not possible to *work* while logged into that account much of the time.

LOL...I got that JUST YESTERDAY Yeah it has ALWAYS bugged me that you can't just be "invisible" for a minute while you clean out your Inventory or whatever...I get so many IMs regardless of the fact that I delete folks from my Friends list every 2 weeks if I dont hear from them...(ya can always re-add), I can hardly log in & do ANYTHING sometimes, AGH... "Advanced Busy Mode" or whatever is a feature I would LOVE ta see in SL. Busy is nice, but they still don't know what you're doin & a lotta folks think you are "hiding" or whatever, LOL...I got a kinda "nasty" BUSY message, so folks know not ta bug me til I respond, heh heh
