Hello to everybody!
It is my first post on this forum, so, be patience!! eheh

I'd like to buy a piece of land in SL.
Somebody told me that on this piece of terrain I cannot build an endless amount of "object" (I think that the proper name is "prism";).

My question is...If I'm thinking about to build on my land a great amount of objects, am I supposed to buy a larger piece of terrain or can I simply "upgrade" my small terrain in order to build in it more prisms??

I hope I'm clear enough!!

Thanks in advance!!

Hi Naevia! Welcome to Second Life and the forums! What you describe is called a prim or a primitive. They are 3D, geometrical shapes such as cones, cubes, spheres etc. People link them together to form other shapes. It is true that the more land you buy, the more prims you are allowed. For example: 512m2 of land allows 117 prims on it; 1024m2 allows 234 prims. All the information you could possibly want to know about this stuff can be found in the Knowledge Base on the SL website.

You can only put the number of prims on a piece of property that said piece of property supports. 512 meters gives you 117 prim. If you want to build more prims than that you have to but more property...but there's a catch. The property must be in the same sim. For example: if you have 512 meters in Arosa and buy 512 Meters in Brown you cannot build more that 117 prims on each piece of property. If you buy the second 512 meter lot in Arosa, you will be able to build 234 prims worth of objects TOTAL. You will NOT be able to build on the other lot any more than the outstanding free prims on the second piece of property. You also need to figure out what you can honest afford per month for the tier charges of extra property.

There are many public sand boxes where you can build big things. They just can't stay there.

I still find the land prices a little steep...I'd wait on buying more land if I were you and build in a sandbox.

I hope this helps.

First of all, I wanna thank u for your readyness...

So, if I think to build lot of things in my terrain do u suggest me to buy a huge piece of land?But...one day the amount of object that I can build will run out!!! How can I improve only this number without buying other land (obviously, if it is possible :-))

I haven't understood the "sandbox" idea; can u explain it again?

Thank u again!!!!

A sandbox is a place to go where you can build things. Press the search button; and under the all tab type in Sandbox. Press enter. There should be a number of places that show up. Teleport to one of these places. You can stay on these pieces of land for free and for long periods of time. You can practice building. Usually sandboxes will auto-return things you are working on after about 5 hours. Never buy or sell anything in a sandbox; it is usually frowned upon. Get a feel for building in the sandbox so you can estimate how much land you will need and how many prims. Do you want to use land just for building or would you put permanent objects on your land that you have made?

Both ot them...

I'd like to build some kind of bridge and then add or attach other objects on it step by step, (such as streetlamps or other decos)...
The problem is that I don't know the specific amount of prims in advance...so I'd like to know the best option that guarantees to me the greatest amount of them.

Thank u once again

Hi Naevia,

First of all, there is a difference between "building" a lot of things and "placing" a lot of things on land.

By using the word "build", you're implying that you want to create objects from scratch, like a house or your furniture. If you want to build (and then maybe sell), then you can use a sandbox for very large items and them Take them into your inventory to store them. That way you build many many things without using more and more land.

Most builders do not actually place a copy of every single object they build on their land unless they own a very large store. Instead, they can sell their builds from a vendor, which takes up far fewer prims.

But if all you want to do is create a pretty place to live, by buying what other people have made, then you have a different situtation. You'll need to figure how much land you can reasonably afford to either buy or rent, then stay within those prim limits for your standard of living. Some people can only afford a small plot of land with a cabin; others can afford a large parcel of land with an Italian villa. The only limitation there is your pocketbook.

I was thinking about make them build by some friends on mine and then simply put those on the land I bought...so, i think to understand that, if I buy a 500m2 land, I can also "place" only 117 prims...

No, prim count is proportional to parcel size. AFAIK land comes in 16 sq increments. So the next smallest size below 512 sq is 496 sq and will give you 113 prims.

PS: Please someone correct me if I'm wrong on this calculation!
