I need "drone" or dummy avatars to populate an office. I need them with basic scripting, ie. typing or shuffling papers actions. I would really like a life like receptionist, like the one at Ng security systems.
Any ideas where one would find such a thing? Could I buy or build a robot and cover it with an avatar skin?

Will you need to walk around all sides of these workers? If not, you could use a cutout like most automatic bartenders. Use an animated texture to make them look like they're doing stuff.

I like the cut out idea for the secretary pool.
The receptionist, however, will be in the center of the floor, viewable from all sides

lol that reminds me, early on when I used to do custom work some guy hired me to do an animation of mining with a pickaxe, I think for a special-purpose camp chair. I wonder what he did with that?

I have ideal not sure if it is what you want but with very basic touch script you could have textured avatar looking prims say things, not sure though how you animate them to type. If you just looking for the appearance of people hanging on in office saying things I would first take snap shots of the desired avatars sitting doing whatever task photograph them send snapshots to hard drive, fine tune your texture, then upload them add them to the appropiate prim and textured scenery. Go to edit, contents, . If you want people to recieve items like notecards, objects you can drag from inventory also. create new script, and type in Hello, Avatar what you like them to say. Top part of script before hello avatar is in relation to objects I think that can say something else. It is simple thing to do. I have been experimenting with 2d sceneries and how to create virtual 3d enviroments a bit since I joined but I can't yet create transparencys. I have plan on creating virtual shop looking textures and when I figure out alpha talking store clerks with touch scripts. Still figuring things out though because I am still relatively new and inexperienced. I know there are bot scripts out there in Second Life, I am just not sure if they can say more then few sentences or how they work yet or where to look.

Hides form chairs being thrown... Apart from peoples General annoyance with Camping Chairs this is actually a Fine idea. I don't REALLY understand peoples Objections with the chairs, If you don't like places that have them, don't go there, beyond that i don't see any Problems. Angel.

It's not as simple as that, for two reasons: a) They lag sims very badly - even if an avatar isn't just sitting camping and not doing anything else, they create lag just by being connected to the region. And this isn't as simple as "don't go there" because the camp-chair owner might have bought their land, in the same sim, after you, and b) They're infectious - because they give a traffic advantage, people are encouraged to use them in order to gain traffic. If you have a competitor who uses camping chairs, you either have to install them yourself or work around being disadvantaged in Search.

Thank you Yumi, I can definately see #1 as a problem if the chairs are on a shared Sim, On a private sim though, that would just be the owners problem, But anywhere connected to the Main Map, Yes, i see that as Very bad. I have a question about the Second, Didn't LL Remove ALL advantages gained by High traffic other than "Being #1" on the search list? I ask Only because all of the Places i have searched for (And i usually start at the Top of the List) have NOT had these chairs present. Exqample: I did a search for Jewelry recently, I went to the Top three places that appeared on the list, and found Fine Jewelry, But no Chairs. something seems Uneven there. Angel.

We all notice it in-world when the number of concurrent users reaches a certain point, subtract maybe 1,000-2,000 campers all over SL and things would be better for everyone, not just the people who are unfortunate enough to share a sim with them.

You want alts then pay for them like the website suggests. Free basic and 9.95 set up per each alt..
Someone with the 2000 alt campers should be paying for them...and if you have them, keep them on your island...not the mainland.

I've noticed that some shopping-oriented places like to "hide" the camp chairs from plain view - one will land in the mall or shop and all looks fine and un-camped, but if one takes the time to poke around the place, will find another building outside (but on the same land plot) filled with camp chairs, or a basement with chairs, or similar. In my experience, it's rather the casino-type places that tend to cluster camp chairs around the teleport landing point.

I dont mind camping chairs I think they are stupid but I dont mind them..
however I have been to a few places where campers doing roles was very good. I remember landing in a shopping center once. They had two camper spots with 2 people per spot each in the foyer area. The guy did a really good job of it and it was obviously for effect as well. They were security offices. Booths set up with a portable TV swivel chairs etc. One guy was sitting and eating a bag of chips staring at the TV and the other had his feet up on the desk crossed with his hands folded behind his head and was watching TV. It gave me a chuckle that did. I found it to be very nice and I enjoyed seeing it. If its done for effect even if it pays a couple of linden bucks every 10 minutes or so I see no harm in it. I have trouble believing that 4 avatars sitting playing lazy security personel would cause enough lag to worry about. The shoppers would cause more..
Anyhow just my 2 Lindens

I have ideal to end camping in one spot but I have no clue yet how to do it. Camping serves a purpose or people wouldn't pay for it but if they didn't have to all be in one location it might the load and lag better but maybe not.

Wouldn't it be possible to have an object that works on the camping chair principle but is only usable by group members? So that you could hire/invite specific people who you know are "real" avatars and only they could use the objects? And then instead of AFK alts uselessly lagging the sim, some poor newbie (or midbie or oldbie -- I'm premium now and I'd still go for something like this) could make a bit of money while simultaneously doing things they'd be doing anyway, not exploring perhaps but IM'ing, sorting inventory, reading notecards, etc. Or is there some object like that out there already and it just isn't as popular as the camp chairs?

From: Rihanna Laasonen Wouldn't it be possible to have an object that works on the camping chair principle but is only usable by group members? yes. The script would check to see if the camper is on the list, or in the right group, or whatever. Or, you could give each person their own chair that they carry around with them.
