Can other people in the room see conversation when you IM someone who is not there? I thought IM was private until someone on land heard what i was IMing someone else who was not there.

That's weird, IM's should be private...as far as I know nobody can "hear" them.

Normally IM are private and no one else hear them....

But 2 remarks to that...

First, it happened more then once to me that I thought I typed something in a IM, but actually entered my message in public chat.

Then I heard rumours of "devices" that can capture IM's. But for me those are yet only rumours, because I have seen no proof of those yet.

I've heard the same rumours but according to a few scripters so far it can't be done.

A lot of people don't use the chat history window, I think, and that mixes in all their IMs with open chat, and they reply in open chat. I've seen new people do that when I IM'd them from a distance to stop harrassing people in a sandbox or whatever. They pause, their hands do the typing thing.

I don't see any way that any SL object can intercept IMs.

Was there anything unusual about this IM? was it especially long by any chance? was it pasted from the clipboard? special characters? was it a group conference or a private IM? Please try to repeat the error with a pair of trusted friends.
This is the third thread i've seen regarding instant messages falling into the wrong hands in the past two days. Meanwhile, a few weeks ago, my friend started a friends conference with me in it, and pasted a large amount of text from the clipboard. A bunch of random people piped in.. .people who weren't even in his friends list. One of the people was someone in the room with me. Another person was someone we never met before. There may have been other people in the chat who didn't pipe up, but most of the responses were, "Hi, [friend's name], what is this about????" He sent a notice saying the whole thing was a bug and please ignore the message.
We assumed it was some kind of buffer overrun due to pasting such a large amount of text. I feel bad, now, for not investigating further, especially now that there are hints it might be a larger problem. I was busy with many other things at the time... so this post will have to suffice, as far as bug reports go.
