We have seen the asset server problem for some time now with updates and tinkering by the Lindens... Now there is a hardware issue that has caused a total failure of the system? This sounds like a ruse to me because a company dealing with this much tech would have pleanty of hardware backup available. It is my opinion that they are trying to lay the blame for it on the hardware because of their own failure to be able to scale the service. I saw 19000+ logged into the grid last night and I am not surprised it choked on all the bandaids and duct tape they have been placing on it to keep up with the growth.

Maybe this is a good thing, even if it is out a few days for them to implement some changes, but I think we can all be assured this is not the end of our problems. I can envision a serious fall in land prices and new content creation.

When I played Ultima Online one we were thrown from the Europe server. They had to revert to 48 hours back (if I remember well, 2 out of the 3 disk in an combined system crashed during a important moment of the backup.... something like that, but I am no computer expert).

Everyone was bloodred angry and was treatening the company behind Ultima Online with all kind of bad things. The end of Ultima Online was....

Thing is... nothing happened. As soon the server was up again normal game play was restored en no bad word was said.
Ultima Online still exsists....

Doom talking is not what I (and I think many others) are waiting for. Shit happens... and happens to companies as Linden too. Nothing will ever change that...

And concerning you remark of the landprices... Wasn't everyone complaining they were way too high? Well... there....

:)

It's a pity though. I just started playing on the 18th. Like it so much that I was going to get a Premium account today as well as spend 75 USD$ on L$. I'm kind of debating that now.

Everything's still in my inventory right now at the moment, so no need to think about doomsday scenarios :).

Done! And those cookies are delicious btw :p *munches*

There's about 500 or so people left, with 14 of us huddled into the welcome area. No building and/or transferring assets so mostly just sitting and waiting it out :(.

This is a positive thing really, for me anyway. I need a timeout. I have been rocking my arms back and forth in the avatar chat fashion in RL staff meetings here at work, and I'm starting to believe I can actually fly. Not to mention, I swear I am hearing "Quit!" as I pass by the artwork on the walls in the office hallways.

So the asset server keeled over and died. Big whoop. We can't login just now. Big whoop. I can assure you that it's NOT the end of SL ... backups exist. Some things that weren't "saved" before it went poof might be gone. Recent things. But, (second) life will go on...

:)

Land prices will still be high. People will still be selling freebies for exhorbitant amounts to unsuspecting newbies.

For now, have some pie. Pie always makes things better, right? :)

I really don't like pie. Have any ice cream? As someone said, this isn't actually a bad thing. I could use a few hours of downtime to get some RL things done. hehe

I have Mint Chocolate Chip and some combination of several types of Chocolate ice cream in the freezer. Which would you prefer? Or a scoop of each maybe? :)

So, who thinks it isn't actually hardware?

I submit as evidence: There are some people on the grid with inventory intact.
