Hello everyone,

Just letting you know I've posted this on another forum, and I did a search on these forums too but was unable to find a solution that worked. I also posted this is technical and no one has replied - and I'm getting desperate!

For some reason when I tried to log into SL the other day I got a message about mangled data and bad upstream connection. So I followed it's instructions and uninstalled and reinstalled about 3 times altogether. I also did a defrag. Next time I tried to log in it crashed halfway through loading, just quit the programme. o_o

I updated my graphics driver and so on, under instruction from the FAQ, but it still crashes. AGH. I thought it might be the uni too, since there's a lot of people on it, obviously, but I've been on SL here before without trouble. It started after I downloaded the update, maybe it's something in that that has pushed ot past the uni network connection speed boundaries?

My PC itself is fine and dandy and has run SL fine for a long time. It could be the uni connection has had a tantrum or something, I don't know.

So, to summarise, here's what I've tried so far:

-Un/reinstalling (Many times, using Add/Remove programmes)
-Downloading/Reinstalling without a firewall
-Changing my login preferences to 'My Home' rather than 'Last Location'
-Logging in from different locations
-Deleting my cache files (Application data>SL etc.)
-Defragging the computer (Many times)
-Running virus/spam checks

I'm unable to either stay in SL long enough to to any tests, or I crash halfway through loading.

Can someone help, please? It's been aaages XD

Thank you!

Okee here are some of my specs (bearing in mind that I used to be able to run SL just fine on them)

Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 Ver. 6.14

Processor: GenuineIntel Family 15 Model 2 2.4 GHz Stepping 9 (2 CPUs)

Bios: IntelR - 42302e31 Phoenix - AwardBIOS v6.00PG Phoenix-Award BIOS v6.00PG, 03/31

Memory: 512 MB (79% Utilized)

Hard Disks: 37.27 GB, 76.33 GB, 494 MB

Annnd my network info is:

Network: resnet
The bandwith test:
654.5 Kbps - You 654.5 kbps
861.7 Kbps - You 861.7 kbps
946.2 Kbps - You 946.2 kbps
1186.7 Kbps - You 1186.7 kbps

Four tests on it to get an average.

Can anyone please help? :(

When you say "crash" what happens? SL crash or your computer crashes?

What software & services do you have running when this happens? What version of window? Is your copy of windows up to date?

A 5200 card is pretty low end nowadays for running SL, although two years ago I had a 5500 and it worked pretty well. If you check the forums for graphic card discussions some people can't get the 5x00 series to work at all anymore, while some people can get by with very minimum settings.

Also if you have a computer lab support team for your university, ask them if they've put a block on programs that suck up a lot of bandwidth. My old college started running tests to see who was using tons of bandwidth and sending out notices to students - this was in the Napster heyday, so extreme bandwidth use generally meant you were filesharing.

If you have access to another higher end computer on the university grid, try logging into SL from there. If you can get in on another machine, the problem is something on your PC. If not, then chances are there's something on the university network blocking it.
