What is a "Void" or "Protected" Sim?

Hello, I have a really nice waterfront plot of land and right next to it is an entire region owned by Gov Linden. When regions in the area were being sold at auction one by one, this particular one was skipped for some reason--along with other water regions.
It does have a small beach but I would say the total land area in this sim would be about 5%. Does LL auction sims with so little land? Or will they eventually just leave it and label it as "protected"? The sim is named--why would they skip a sim only to go back to it later? Is there a way to recognize whether a sim will be auctioned or whether it will always be "public" land?

It will go up for auction soon. Go sailing on it before it gets divided up!

they are linked mostly to estate sims although at one point LL was in fact selling them. They come in groups of 4 per CPU instead of one. They can have land but you need to leave a lot of space and can only really be used for very light traffic. I put a golf course on one it worked well but anything more complicated its gonna be a problem. They are pretty neat actually if your just into relaxation and stuff, but they are not meant for any heavy use or to support scripting because each sim is only running on 1/4 cpu compared to a regular sim which is 1 per CPU. They are meant as a buffer zone between islands etc. Aslo a void sim is not the same as a protected sim I just defined a void sim.

From: Lord Steadham They don't leave areas that big as public land. Completely false. They certainly do leave whole sims as public land. Look at the mainland, TONS of open water sims that are Linden owned and always will be.

No need for landmarks, just open the map and look at the original mainland and look for the large areas of water between sims. I beleive originally these were void sims, just blank spots on the map, but at one point LL used old servers to fill in the gaps with open water spaces. The stretch between the southern mainland and the nothern part that has the prim rig on it is made up of these sims, about 4 of them I think.

Let me ask this then: what are the odds LL will leave the newer sim protected and not try to cash in in the 2.5K for the auction plus the monthly tier? If they are stooping to hawk headphones, I don't see them leaving newer sims without paying owners.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I guess its wishful thinking on my part that it will be left unsold. Right now, this unsold sim provides a really nice view and allows me acces to the ocean. If it goes up for auction, I couldn't afford to buy enough of it to maintain my water access. Ah well, I'll enjoy it while it lasts and try to be satisfied with my "boxed in" little beach if it does sell. Gov Linden does seem to be leaving several pure water sims open between various points in Nautilus(fingers crossed!) but none of those touch land at any point. I just don't see the point of water if every plot of it is built up as if it were land with red fences. So a "void" sim is an empy square that is just blank on the map--you can't enter it. While a "protected" sim is one you can enter--but is never going to be sold? Even more confusing are sims labeled "empty". It's just confounding because several land brokers try to get me to buy claiming sims next to plots they want to sell are "voids" or "protected"--yet how can they tell for sure? Thanks for helping a newbie!

Void sims are sims with a limited amount of prims - I believe it's 1875 prims per void sim. They are sold in sets of four (you can't buy just one) and must be anchored to an island. The idea is to protect the edges of your island, as, theoretically, someone could reserve a space adjacent to your island and destroy your waterfront view. The cost of a set of void sims is equal to that of buying an island. Tier is probably the same too. Ask the concierge.

No hehe they are sims as defined in the thread they come in sets of 4 per cpu and can't handle a lot of traffic you can build on them sail on them golf on them surf ... do whatever you want on them. I used to live on a void sim it was wonderful. I want another one however people are starting to charge crazy prices to rent them and purchase them when in essence one void sim is work 1/4 the value of a refular sim in tier and purchase price. Protected land is linden land its not necessarily a low prim sim or anything (low prim sim is what a lot of people call void sims) its simply land put there by LL and can have several purposes. It can be made of void sims or regular sims. Also do not pay more for a plot on the edge of a sim because you will probably wake up one day and login to find that linden lab has added more sims to you end of the world parcel. This is a cheap marketing ploy. If you want water front you have to BUY it. So the edge of a sim and that nothingness you are looking at is NOT a void sim this is a deception a void sim you can walk on run on sail on. What it is is the end of the world which can be expanded at any time by LL. If you walk into a barrier there is NO sim there and quite possibly will have one there in the future.
