For those of you who wanted to know if SL would work with Vista:

I finally got around to getting the final version of Windows VIsta installed on my desktop. (This is not a beta, but the final, RTM version. This is being released to corporate users next month and home users in January).

My machine has an Athlon 64-3800, 2GB of RAM, and a GeForce 7600 GT.

With this web browser and an SL window open (sitting at my home location), the system is using about 784 MB of RAM, and SL is giving between 25 and 30 FPS. Windows XP in the same scenario uses about 730MB.

Teleporting to Ahern: My FPS dropped to 12.9 with 13 people present and 22 "child agents" (people in adjacent sims that can see this sim). Memory usage jumped to 880MB. My Windows XP notebook sitting right next to the desktop is using 937MB. (the FPS is roughly the same, but they're not the same video card, so I can't really compare the frame rate).

Note: since Windows uses RAM to cache disk data, memory usage will be lower on systems with less RAM. I don't feel like pulling DIMM's, so I won't be giving a low-memory report real soon.

The cool part is that I did not have to disable the Aero interface in Vista, so apparently the new OpenGL rendering mode that MS introduced for RC2 (renders OpenGL natively and then memory-maps it to a D3D surface) works.

I'm going to continue my testing after I get the rest of my equipment up and running, so drop questions in here if you have them.

ram usage tests won't be accurate unless you use a system that run wothout a cache.

Yeah, that's true... but I wasn't sure how to disable disk caching, and if that's even completely possible with Windows. What I was most concerned with was whether Vista would hog more RAM than XP does... so far, the two look very similar (although Vista final does seem to be using less RAM than the betas did).

It would be useful, if possible, to compare performance between your desktop and laptop with *both* running XP as well.

When I have more time, I want to do a straight-up comparison on the same machine, running a series of tests in various areas. I want to get memory usage stats and frame rates, and see how XP and Vista really stack up against each other.

My big concern was memory usage. So far, I haven't seen any real problems there. The notebook and desktop are running the same software and both have the same amount of RAM; I pretty much made my notebook as much of a clone of my desktop as possible.

This was just a quick comparison to see if Vista had any major performance flaws. So far, I haven't found any in regards to SL. There ARE still some problems with other applications (Media Player and IE both get non-responsive fairly often).

I will post more as I have more info available. Unfortunately, I need to get some work done today, so I won't have much time to do benchmarking this weekend.
