I too read the recent article in an Australian newspaper with some amusement and sadness as I knew that c**p like that would be taken seriously by those wanting to jump on the anti-terrorist bandwagon. (It is equally sad that journalists and their publishers in this age we live in are so irresponsible).
Some of the comments in another thread got me thinking however that it is naïve to suppose that the idle chat, instant messages, and indeed voice taking place in SL goes unmonitored or unrecorded, and most probably with the co-operation of Linden Labs.
There exists a plethora of software capable of scanning text and voice in any language and in huge volumes looking for key words or phrases, and then identifying the source and target. All this could be done entirely on ‘Anti-terrorism’ grounds.
This doesn’t really bother me although perhaps it should, may be I should be shouting about my ‘civil liberties’ and demanding openness about whether my communications are recorded, but the cynic in me says I’m wasting my time.
What is the view of other residents, do you think monitoring takes place? And if so is it a good or bad thing?

None of our communications on the internet, telephones, or cell phones are completely private and all have the ability to be monitored by the authorities, or the provider of the communication service.

I feel as long as you are not doing anything illegal, (notice I did not say bad) you have nothing to fear.
