ok i almost understand land
what im a little foggy on is group land, here is te scenario

i buy a 512sqm lot and my friend buys a 512sqm lot next to mine and we group it

now from what i read when you group it you get a bonus ammount of land you can have in the same sim

here is where im a bit confused
i know for each of our 512sqm lots we do not have to pay tier
if we join them and group them that will not affect the no tier on 512's correct?
the land bonus you get for grouping if we got whatever ammount the bonus is we have to pay tier for that correct?

Deed the land to group, and click the OWNER MAKES CONTRIBUTION WITH DEED button box.

this will transfer your tier to the group. KEEP IN MIND, this means your partner in the group can sell the land because it would be group owned.

Edit: Your group will be allowed to hold an additional 102 sqm.

and that is with 2 512sqm lots?

Sorry 102, I miscalculated.

You would have to buy that land.
But it will not cost you monthly tier.

there is a sticky thread detailing this:

HOW TO: DEED LAND TO A GROUP (TRANSFER FROM INDIVIDUAL TO GROUP)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Join or Create a Group
2. Set Land Contribution
3. Deed Land to Group

JOIN OR CREATE GROUP

If you haven't already, you need to join the group you want to deed land to, or create a group. Note: You will need 2 people to create a group (Primary and alt avatars will be sufficient).

SET LAND CONTRIBUTION

1. Select Edit >> Groups from the menubar. A list of the groups you belong to appears.

2. Highlight the group you want to donate to click the Info button. The Group Information box opens.

3. Click the "Land & L$" tab.

4. In the Your Contribution box, enter the amount you want to donate and click "Apply".

DEED LAND TO GROUP

1. Go to the land and right-click it. Select About Land from the pie menu.

2. Click on the General tab.

3. Click the Set button next to the Group name. A list of groups will appear.

4. Select the group you want and click Set.

5. Check the Allow Deed to Group box nad click the Deed button.

Note: Owner Makes Contribution With Deed combines these steps if you want a shortcut. This assumes you wish to deed and contribute equal amounts.

If you get an error that your group does not have enough land credits, first check that you selected the correct group and you allocated enough land in the first step above.

Known issue:
If you have a parcel that used to be owned just by one owner and is now to be group land, there is sometimes an issue with being able to allocate land to a group as the system is seeing the owner as trying to own double the land as opposed to trying to change his or her allocation.

Yeah, that. :D

If you had to pay tier for it, it wouldn't be much of a 'bonus,' would it?

Be prepared for some learning frustration when you start building.
"The group" is not the same as "you" for object permissions. If you don't watch you current group tag and land permissions and don't build with permissions for Next Owner (the group) to Modify, Copy and maybe Sell then you can find yourself unable to edit or copy 'your' objects.

This is something I've only just started at. No doubt in time it will all seem simple and intuitive to me.

No, it doesn't have to be in the same sim. When you find the extra land to buy. Don't click on the Buy option from the Menu. Click on the About Land option, then click on the Buy For Group option at the bottom of the window.

Well, usually it's simpler than that, if it's just building on group land that's at issue. You'll want objects to be *set* to the group (so you can turn on autoreturn for non-group objects someday) which you get automatically for prims rezzed while wearing the group tag, but NOT share nor deed them to group, which is where next-owner perms can become relevant. (There are a very few script functions, however, that must be in prims owned by group in order to function correctly on group land. Stuff that adjusts parcel media and access/ban lists, and that count parcel-prims-per-user come to mind as examples.)

But if the issue is collaborative building, then yes, permissive next-owner perms can be a big help, as can allowing collaborators to Modify each other's objects. (But that's not inherently a group land thing.)

So this is a similar issue to what I'm dealing with now. I have a large plot of land and want to allow my group to set it as home for them.

From what I understand I'd have to deed that land to the group, but I don't want anyone else to be able to sell/edit/alter/pay for that land.

Do I just have to edit the roles in the group so that only I have powers over the land?

It's a rather large piece of land so I don't want to screw up and have to post a "Land-Bots are the devil (but my own ignorance caused the problem)" thread!

make sure officers cannot sell land/teraform or assign themselves roles, and make sure group liabilities arent enabled on the everyone and officer roles. there may be more but those are the first i look at.

dont make that assumption. although he might never cheat you, it is possible he could accidentally screwup the group or lose the land.

A few things to point out.

First, you do NOT have to join the land to share prims. You can leave the boundaries as they are now, and put them into a group and SL just acts like they are all one plot.

Second, you do NOT have to deed the land to the group.

Deeding land to the group can lead to all sorts of problems. Your friend/partner accidentally setting it for sale when they thought they were only playing with settings, etc.

Instead, you may want to consider following the steps from my sticky, but instead of deeding the land to the group, just set the land to group.

Third, about tier. You each still have the exact same 'tier' as you had before and you pay LL the same tier fees. HOWEVER, you'll notice on the 'Land and L$' tab that you have additional land that the group can own. You can 'buy land for group' to use this bonus tier (be very, very careful because if you just BUY LAND with an eye to deeding/setting it to the group, you'll end up raising your land tier. You must buy it directly into the group using the BUY LAND FOR GROUP command).

Good Luck!

What is the difference?
09-11-2007 10:11
What is the difference between "setting" land to group and "deeding" land to group on a parcel purchased on a private island?
Also, how would one go about taking said land out of group if it is "set" to group?
