Apparently one of my rezday gifts was this, a device that can supposedly restart sims.
I've asked around and no one's heard of it. I don't see it in my transaction logs.

A 'Simulator Manual Restart'. I fired it up and chicked out after it gave me a 15 second warning. If it had been just me in the sim I might have gone through with it. Idunno.
But it's up for sale if anyone wants to take a look at it. If any Lindens have ideas about it please post here. Thx.

Yes. Sometimes when I check it says Ben Linden, sometimes it says Unkown or NULL.

Has random objects in inventory been increasing?
Lately I had something like "madcents jackpotter" offered by "madcents.com", no last name.. I declined it and then went to look for it in trash to report it, but it wasn't there either.

You got one of those too?

One was sent to me early this AM (SLT). I declined it too.
Sounded too much like another grid attack set-up.

To the creator of that item, in case you read this:
If i don't know the sender of an item, and i'm not expecting an item, I will decline it, no questions asked.

My bets are it's just a scripted object wandering the grid and selecting random people to offer it to. If I get it again, I think I'll choose accept to look at it at least.

If anyone else sees this and gets one, see if you can figure out who it's from.

I'm not so sure about that. When i got mine, i was in Busy mode, so the object auto-declined (but i would have declined it anyways, had I not been busy). My house is in the center of my land, and my land is set to "No Script" and "No Build", with an auto return turned on to it's fastest setting. Also, my home is outside of the 96m sensor range from parcel boundries, on all sides.

So a wandering object would not have been able to get my name from a random sensor scan, since a sensor outside the parcel couldn't reach me and one that travelled over the boundry... the no scripts would've stopped the scan (and the wandering, and the llGiveObject). This is different, I think.

To anyone who gets one of these, Please only rez it on "No script" land, if you're going to investigate the object.

To any Linden reading this, maybe it might be a good idea to do a search of the asset server and check one of these objects out. An ounce of precaution is worth a pound of cure.

It probably is, actually.
Although you should be aware no-script only protects up to a certain height, 40m I think, and past that they will run fine. Recently it is also possible, according to the LSL wiki, to run a sensor over 300m+. It would also be very easy to set up a number of staff with attached scanners fetching keys.
What I also wonder (can't recall right now) is if, giving objects only works in a sim, or globally, and if an attached object offers inventory, does it take the user name, or still the object name? (would make sense to change this to xx name's object name either way)

haha. They have an ebay auction for placing ads on the machine. Apparently there are going to be "1000's" of these ingame at some point in time, with each providing "10,000-1,000,000's" of impressions "every day."

Take ANY strange or suspicious object you are Given to a SCRIPT DISABLED Sandbox before you Rez it for examination. You can examine the Object there with relative safety. It might be a Good idea to Let a Linden Know also, Providing as Much information about the Object as you can safely determine. If you are still unable to determine a clear safe purpose for the Item, Err on the side of Caution, and Delete it from Inventory, and Trash Can.

Unfortunately it's a Favored trick of Griefers to give strangers (Mostly New persons) Self Replicating Prims or other Grid Attacking script items, and wait for them to Rez it out of Curiosity, The New person then looks like they are Launching the grid Attack. Whenever i receive Unsolicited objects from people i don't know, I slip them into a special Hold Folder so i don't Rez them by Mistake, and i examine them in the Fashion described above.

Better safe than sorry, for ALL of us.

Angel.

I know who this is from - we had a free and frank exchange of views on the subject of his business tonight - and not just this "mailshot" of his. I said sending the object was spamming. He said that it was not because he sends it only once and the recipient can opt out.

It won't harm your inventory, avatar, or the grid in any way - it's an advertising ploy.

I'm the creator of the madcents machines!!
10-30-2006 20:41
I have been handing them out to people for free. They are completely harmless and only exist for the sole purpose of making money. Do you think I would put up an entire website focused on them if they were not legit? www.madcents.com check it out for yourself, its real and so are the machines.

Anyway, I'm also hosting a contest for them as we speak where I'm giving out $100 US for whoever has the most slot machine referrals.

I'm sorry if you guys are thinking they are a 'grid attack' object as they are not.

Please IM me in game if you would like help with them or would like one.

Yikes, it seems that people are very unpleasantly taking in me sending a product that I have spent literally hundreds of hours producing for FREE! I have tried so hard to make this thing great and profitable for anyone who wants one. I got the idea from a book that I just read called 'Pyro Marketing' where the author sees Gilette Mach3 commercials and laughs but never trys them until he gets one free in the mail. From that day forward he was a Mach3 man.

I have all the info in the readme that pops up when you pull one out. You can also view the same info on my website. And yes they have ads on them and that is why there is a ebay auction for buying an ad. Which I might also add that its very poorly done, I am just testing that market.

I'm very much bothered though by about 5% of the people who i've sent these machines to, as they are complaining about them like i'm some kind of spammer or something. I gotta tell you, if Fox Woods (Mohegan Sun) <--- casinos sends me a free RL slot machine, I'm gonna tell people about it, and I figured in SL maybe the same could be said for my products.

I was also going on the idea of what google does, adsense advertising on search results on the main page. You do a search and google serves you ads, you don't have to pay to use the search engine. I've named my business 'madcents' which is very similar sounding to adsense. I've put a lot of effort into this and wish people would give it a chance.

On a side note, I know I should never have chosen this name...... Timwillhack, but its short for my real name dangit.

For those that are really bothered by my free machines, I am sorry, and wish I could come up with a better way of giving them away, but never thought people would hate them that much.

:(

I wasn't terribly concerned about the item, it's just the method of distribution, and the idea other people may now copy it. At least you say you only offered it once, and it does look like something you put work into. Word-of-mouth can go a long way as well, and that might have carried it just as well with less controversy. The current mindset of the average SL'er is probably not that positive towards things they view as commercializing either, as I guess you've seen.

Had I made it, I might have talked to a number of existing casino owners, made sure the item was low-prim and low-lag, and seen if they'd take any. Though it might not spread as far it might not get near as much of an unfavorable response.

I haven't really used these forums, but wanted to chime in here.

I don't know about some of these, but in reference to the slot machines- I just wanted to say that I know the creator of them personally, and it isn't an attack or scam of any kind- it's free and makes money. I can understand why people would assume it was spam- we all get tons of it. And everybody is looking to screw people, especially on the internet where it's faceless and convenient.

But really, give it a chance. If somebody uses it, you make money. He makes money, too, but not from you. It may not be a lot at first, but come on, it's free SL cash.

I realize I sound like a shill, but nothing I can do about that. I just feel bad for my friend making these things- admittedly, in retrospect it seems like the random giving them away could be construed negatively- but hindsight is always 20/20, isn't it?

But even at that, he didn't hand you an ad to buy his stuff- he handed you a free slot machine that, while it would make him money and have (non-offensive and non-obtrusive) ads on it, it would make you money, too, for no cost, other than the brief amount of time it takes to read what it's about and put one out [and since if you're reading it you're in the middle of playing a game, chances are you've got a bit of time on your hands! ;)]. If that's the worst thing to happen on a given day, I'd call it a pretty good day.

Bottom line: Yeah, a lot of people try to screw you, in real life and second life. This guy is not one of them. Check out the thing, give it a shot, and if you dont like it ditch it, but at least read what it's about before blasting it.

Ok sorry but this struck me as highly amusing!!:D :D

I haven't a clue why folks are up in arms about your product, may look into it, may not, but THAT (see above) response didn't help much.

*attempts to regain breath*

Oh BTW many many many many folks see gambling machines as a huge waste of time and space and they soon may be illegal in SL.

I'd suggest a better outlet for your skills.....this one may become obsolete.

Just FYI

Unfortunately Tim whereas in RL most things you receive Annonymosly in the Mail are simply advertising, the same doesn't hold true for most "Mystery objects" in SL.
I think you can see now how some advertising ploys that work in RL simply don't transfer to the New Dynamic of a Digital world. Nice Try, but better luck next time.
