I think the normal sim limit now is 40 people. I think private island owners can set the limit themselves, or get staff members to set the limit for them. I've been in a sim with over 70 people; at the time that was quite a feat. I recall reading lately about a sim with a hundred people in it.

We're on mainland, so this confirms my belief I should spread out the meeting times! One hundred people... could anyone even move! It weirds me out when I can hear people and not see them, LOL. Again thanks .

From: Brenda Archer How many people can fit in a region? Depends how many of those people are clowns, and how many small cars you have on hand.

At the U2 concert they were able to Pack the sim fairly Densely, i believe the numbers hovered in the seventy to eighty range. At this event the organizers had people in the Crowd Requesting Spectators remove Attachments, Prim Hair, Scripted items, Just go Very Basic. By Limiting the numbers of such items they almost completely eliminated Lag even though the stage and Band were fairly effects intensive. How many people you want to Stuff on a Sim Is effected by Active scripts and other things. In the case of the Concert, Less meant More.

There are some Mainland sims still limited to 30 based on the class of their server. If your sim is having problems like not letting you in when the map indicates 30 avatars, be sure to let Live Help know. It took some time, but they did fix the problem I had in Jizo two months ago.

This is why the Pooley Stage is located at the intersection of several sims. You can, in theory, have 40 people close to the stage, and 40 more just over the sim boundry... I can't recall if it splits acroos 2 or 4 sims, but they use that positioning to increase the max capacity for a meeting.
Unfortunately, 80+ people in close proximity still cause a LOT of lag, even if half of them are in the sim next door! I could not move or operate at all when I attempted to attend a Community Roundtable meeting at Pooley Stage. It was the first and definitely last time I'll ever attempt that with my under-powered Mac Mini!

Sounds like Second Life needs a way to have Virtual Virtual Reality. Where you can visit a virtual sim where some big event is occurring. Just stack a bunch of these virtual sims where you can still watch some event, but not exceed the 40 person limit. Keep adding till everyone is there.
There's probably lots of ways to do something like that. If we have a million residents, then we ought to some sort of way be able to fill several thousand of us into a stadium to watch an event.
