I have a question - to be well received in SL as a live musician, does one need to be an accomplished musician IRL and to have a real-life following?

If I were to answer my own question, I guess it would be yes... Otherwise there'd be an influx of Britney-wannabe-karaoke-addicts.

Right???

I'd say no, you don't have to have a RL following, though talent and/or skill is needed.

If you want a paying gig in SL, the person paying has to like what you do. That's pretty much all there is to it.

I agree with Fiona. I've seen dozens of live acts (probably more than a hundred) thanks to the Live Music Enthusiasts group, and the only one I ever heard of IRL was U2.

No. I love live music musicians and go often to live music events.........and the best sometimes are someone I've never heard of before.

And also, what's wrong with a talented karaoke singer? I've heard a few and if they sing well and do the original justice.........what's wrong with it? But, I do like for those who do sing karaoke to own up the fact. Mostly they do do that. :)

As long as your voice doesn't clear rooms, cause dogs to howl, or set off Car alarms, you should be well received.
SL is developing it's own in world talent Base. it probably won't be too long before record labels begin looking for Good performers in SL.

Ive bought a few CDs as a result of hearing acts on SL, but I *LOVE* music.

Many of the gigs are well recieved - musicians should make more out of it by offering a free mp3 or something or a place to buy a real shirt.

There's a fair bit of karaoke wannabees knocking around too...Try some of the open mics for a good laugh ;)
