Unusually Poor SL Performance -- Is It Just Me ??

Hi :-)

For about the past 2-3 weeks, since the last round of rolling restarts upgrading the server side, SL has been for me the worst it has been in years. Yet, I have seen no general complaints about performance on the forums. So I have to wonder if it's just me.

My issues are:

1) I freeze (can't move) for 5-10 seconds at a time. This occurs very frequently and almost always when I land after a TP;

2) Frequent rubber-banding (AV moves far beyond where I released a movement key) WITHIN a sim. This has occurred for me in the past at sim crossings but never before within a sim and it occurs frequently;

3) Sim crossings totally suck -- I have stopped even trying to fly aircraft -- for me the worst it has been in years;

4) Frequent failed teleports;

5) Huge lag while building -- objects move into the location I "put" them as much as 5-10 seconds after I "move" them. Until they finally settle they first move back to the original local and after a period of time finally move to the correct spot.

I am using a good gaming rig -- Intel Quad Core, 6 gigs ram, Nvidia 9800GT 512 MB and I have an excellent cablle connection 28 Mbps...

ANYONE ELSE HAVING THESE ISSUES??

Its been pretty stable for me for a while now, certainly not noticed the things you have reported. It was a bit slow in Nautilus yesterday and I froze for a few seconds upon arrival but I think the region was nearly full so put it down to a bit of lag.

It has been horrible for me for the past two weeks. All the things you mentioned, and more.

All of my groups are complaining about it. People I talk to, work with....they're all complaining.

I've been getting the rubber-banding effect, as well as the freeze-frame thing....A LOT.

My guess is that you're using 1.21... If so, you're not alone. (>_<;)

1) I freeze (can't move) for 5-10 seconds at a time. This occurs very frequently and almost always when I land after a TP;

2) Frequent rubber-banding (AV moves far beyond where I released a movement key) WITHIN a sim. This has occurred for me in the past at sim crossings but never before within a sim and it occurs frequently;
Keep your minimap up, I bet it will flicker red a lot. That looks like it came with the latest sim server update. You CAN try lowering your bandwidth slider, but your mileage my vary. (>_<;)

3) Sim crossings totally suck -- I have stopped even trying to fly aircraft -- for me the worst it has been in years;
I have to admit, I kinda see an improvement there lately, but still... That's just me. (=_=)
From: someone
4) Frequent failed teleports;
That's probably the same as your rubber-banding and simline issues.. Try rolling back your bandwidth slider a bit... I dunno. (>_<;)
From: someone
5) Huge lag while building -- objects move into the location I "put" them as much as 5-10 seconds after I "move" them. Until they finally settle they first move back to the original local and after a period of time finally move to the correct spot.
You know? This is starting to sound like a connection issue. Have you had it tested lately? (o.o)

Most of your problems, except that teleport lag spike, sound like network and server side issues. I have very good cable internet myself, but, a couple months ago my ISP was doing some street work to upgrade the splitters to support a higher upload rate for their VOIP services... Durning that month and a half, there were times when some functions would work, but network intensive things would bog bad. Then I go test my connection with Cnet and find that things are fine, just intermittent. Once they were done... All was well. (^_^)y

I've been getting lots of failed ports lately, upwards of 50% of my port attempt get timed out.

Sometimes I will click again in a few seconds and it works, sometimes it takes 10 or more tries.

all of the above and I am crashing about 2 to 3 times a day. I never crashed, even during that terrible time last April. It isn't my computer which is very new and a gaming computer. The last two updates have been a total mess, but I am wondering also about the amount of users online. It seems it is around 62,000 consistantly when I log in. Another example of growing too fast?

Actually, I was doing ok two weeks ago when we were hitting 70-72,000. But since loading 1.21.6, I'm crashing constantly too....or wishing I would because performance is so horrible.

VWR-9605 references the extreme texture lag introduced in the 1.21 viewer
VWR-8818 references the lag and client hang when using the texture picker while building

I was applauding this viewer when it came out because of the many little annoyances and long-standing bugs it did away with for me. However, in the process it introduced these two, which are far more than little annoyances and make building or exploring or shopping exercises in frustration. I'd rather deal with a swarm of gnats than a couple of hornets.

My system is no slouch, My internet connection is historically solid, and the problems I am encountering did not exist in the previous viewer.

Unfortunately, the upgrade from 1.20 was mandatory.
I remember the RC cycle for 1.20 was very long and intensive, as they hunted to for crash conditions. In the process, many other things were fixed too. Why couldn't 1.21 RC cycle have gone a little longer, to clear up these known issue before releasing it into the wild.

I know there are alternative viewers, based on 1.19 that do not have these issue, but I shouldn't have to hunt down 3rd party software when there is an official client (one which ought to work).

No it wasn't? :confused:

I still have 1.20.17 installed on my other puter and it connects without nagging and for any viewer just add "-channel SomethingRandomHere" to the shortcut and you can use the official viewers going back to 1.18.x.

It doesn't matter how long it's in "testing". Each viewer always introduces at least as many bugs as it fixes :p.

My problems started before the new client. Mine came with the server side "upgrade" that was rolled out the last week of September - the first week of October.

And I am currently using 120.17...I had to roll back from 121 because of the bug it introduced when run on Nvidia cards that causes skins to take on the texture of your shoes and which stays that way even after the shoes are removed :-O

My issues were present on 121 as well as 120.

I've been getting freeze-ups of up to a minute or more, sometimes followed by total computer crash (not just SL crash) - on good quad-core comp. Only in the last day or two.

On the older comp, which has inferior SL performance anyway, there has been no deterioration.

That's quite odd. I received the red bordered "You Must upgrade" message. I will try the shortcut trick you mention. Thank you.

Since I downloaded version 1.21.6 a week or so ago I've had noticeably poor performance. Today I downloaded the release client 1.21.5 (odd it should have a ref. no. less than the current version, unless it's an old release client that just hasn't been removed/replaced) and it may just be my imagination or coincidence but it did seem to be performing better.

However I went back to 1.21.6 (don't ask me why) and the last hour has been a total waste of time;

Inventory gone,
Texture inventory constantly reloading,
Textures not rezzing,
Lag like I've never experienced before (and that's on my Island where there is currently no builds, no textures, no prims, nothing at all, in fact not even an island - doing a spot of remodeling),
Ruth (or that new thing) appearing every time I log in,

Then to cap it all just as I was changing my clothes, and was standing butt naked the system locked up. So of course when I logged back in..my region wasn't available, and it sent me to a nearby neighbouring one instead :eek:. If my neighbours are reading this.."sorry folks didn't mean to alarm you"

Think I might watch TV this evening..Perre..:p

I have to agree with this. I just tried SL on my 5YO machine at work with little to no lag-spike problems... It's either something in upper end of the graphics settings or a change in the way SL handles multicore systems or... Something... I dunno what. (>_<;)

Yep, all of this. It's been so crappy that I haven't even bothered to log in for four, almost five days. I must log in tonight though and I'm really hoping that I'm able.

I'm not seeing problems quite this bad...but I do get the occasional screen freeze for a minute with 1.21, where I did not with 1.20.

Idle question: Will there ever be a version 2.0?

yes ive noticed with my sim, it started with the new serversoftware and im sure its not my viewer.
the sim runs healthy all the times, sim fps / physics fps 45
but for no reason simfps drops down to 1fps in worst case - maybe for one or half a second, then it runs fine at 45 fps again till the next dropdown, as i remember some people have reported in the thread rolling restart 1.24.7 / 1.24.9
to play a game becomes a nightmare this way and it really drives me crazy.

For the last two days now I've been experiencing horrendous lag. Pushing the direction keys has no effect for about eight seconds, then I find myself sliding or walking inexorably into walls and doors and off platform edges. I've lowered my bandwidth to less than one third of what is available to me and pulled all graphics settings down to low, which fixed it for all of thirty seconds, then it was back. I'm running a dual-core processor and prior to yesterday had little or no problems like this.

I was in Aitui earlier, only seven avatars present, sim FPS was well into the 40s, time dilation was 0.99 - 1.00, good ping, no dropped packets, and yet my avatar simply did not *move* for eight to ten seconds after I pressed the forward key, then he just blundered into walls and displays (my apologies to anyone I may have cannoned into there...)

I'm not even running the official SL viewer; I'm running Nicholaz EC-h, and this is driving me barmy :(
