Multiple Crashes

For the past 48 hours I have rarely been able to stay more than 15 minutes in SL before it crashes. My mid-range system is fairly well beyond the basic spec required:

Hardware:
Intel E6400 Core 2 Duo 2.13GHz
Asus P5B LGA775 mobo
2GB DDR-2 dual channel RAM
3x 320GB SATA2 3GB/s HDDs w/16MB caches
2x dual layer DVD RWs (Sony + Benq)
GeForce 7600 GT dual DVI videocard w/256MB
22" widescreen LCD monitor at 1680x1050, 32bit
A second monitor is connected but powered off while I'm using SL.
Nothing is overclocked and system temperatures are consistently _low_.

Software
XP Pro fully patched
All drivers are the most recent stable
WebRoot SpySweeper w/antivirus
ZoneAlarm Pro
In-home wired network of 7 computers (2 XP, 5 Linux)
LinkSys Etherfast Router
3Com DSL modem
Fast DSL connection

I have no speed or stability problems with any other software on this machine, nor do I have any problems with MMP online games.

If anyone has any ideas of what to look for (or is this just full-out buggy software?) I'd really appreciate it.

Good suggestion! I found this thread:

/111/9c/141803/1.html

which discusses XP and AGP problems in SL with AMD and Intel dual core processors, and suggests workarounds. None of the workarounds have solved the problem for me, but they seem to work for a lot of people and they make logical sense.

I think I will try a cache clear and reinstall next, or maybe switch to one of my Linux computers. Sigh.

Only the past 48 hours? Are you hanging out in a busy sandbox and using the First Look client?

I find when building in a busy area, my crash rate increases dramatically.

Same thing happening here for the past two hours, I have crashed occasionally in SL before but never with this frequency. I can go anywhere from 3 to 15 minutes before crashing. So far I have removed and reinstalled my nVidia video card drivers, followed the instructions in the KnowledgeBase to remove and reinstall SecondLife and still it's crashing. Most of the time it crashes to blue screen of death then the machine restarts. Other software seems to work fine including NeverWinter Nights 2.

Hmm... I've just crashed again.

I think my crashes could be related to setting texture alignments on prim faces. I've been doing a lot of that lately.

I suppose I better wait until I'm sure before going and throwing a tantrum on the blog. :)

Well, it looks like the problem I was having with crashing was incorrect RAM timing settings in my bios. The strange thing is that I ran Memtest86 for about 6 hours before installing the OS about 6 months ago when I built this system and it passed but today it failed test 5 on the 2nd pass and then again after starting over on the first pass. I pulled back the settings a bit and ran Memtest86 again and it passed two full cycles. After that I went online for three full hours without a crash. It's strange that I didn't have other problems with this machine. I'm just glad to be able to live my SecondLife again!

Alto, I also was experiencing no problems with other applications running under fully patched Windows XP Pro and also Gentoo Linux on my other hard drive. I know it's a long shot but maybe letting Memtest86 run for a few hours would be worth a try. Some applications appear to reveal hardware problems more than others and it would appear that SecondLife is one of those.

Thanks to those that made other suggestions.

i've only just started crashing I think its something with this particular client. The texture aberrations are back and whatnot that was all gone all of a sudden its back. I had one heck of a crash today one that kinda made me worry about the state of my hard drive as a result. Then I have suddenly been experiencing crashes (the usual kind before and after this mother of all crashes occured) in fact whenever i shut down this client it gives a note that it crashed. It seems to be related to the textures again I had a horrible time building things today because the textures were doing crazier things then usual.

Whatever they tweeked they need to untweek a bit me thinks...
