OK,
I found a really cool deserted beach, and I have my girl with me on a blanket. What would be really cool is some romantic music playing in the background, just as if we had taken a small CD player with us.
What are my options in SL? We do not own the land we are on, but can we still play music? I have a nice compilation I would like to get into SL, can this be done, or do I need to buy music in SL?
Any advice welcome.

From: someone If Music be the Food of Love The internet is a grubby fast-food joint. But seriously... your options are somewhat limited if you don't actually own the parcel of land or have access to modify the land media stream properties. Your best bet would be foryou and your friend to select the same internet audio source using a 3rd party media player (winamp, windoze media player, realplayer, itunes, etc...) Not the most romantic solution, but it's get you and your friend listening to the same station.

There are also 'Blank CDs' available in-world into which you can insert your own uploaded music. The catch? The track has to be split into individual wav files no longer than 10 seconds in length (using a wav splitter) and each of those segments cost 10L to upload. That's 200-300L per average length single. /cue copyright issues debate.

Burn a CD and fedex it to her in a nice box with a ribbon, preferably along with some chocolates. Then agree to play the same CD when you both get the chance to meet in SL. Repeat as required. Stuttering streamed music is such a turn off.

I host my own server for only a few people. I've been in the same sitatution and I've streamed on my own land with it. I'm sure there is a scripted object that plays 'out loud' a url (similiar to when people play music instruments). I don't know of any personally, but it just has to be out there.
An option is to run a SHOUTcast server from yours, and have SO run WinAmp, or some other media outlet. Then you'd be the 'DJ' and can play what you wish. Otherwise, ask around for some soft music public streams and have both of you connected to WinAmp that way.

You can buy musical instruments in world that play nice looped instrumentals. There is a harp, lute, etc. available.
Set it out and let it play with a touch.
