I have a lovely waterfront area that I put a lot of money and effort into to make an enjoyable and oceanlike. A wonderful seaside club. Now that water has stopped working nobody can see what the land is supposed to look like and my traffic is about 1/4 of what it was.

Am I stupid for paying maintenance during this situation?

Not to minimize your concerns... no doubt you are in the right, as water is an essential part of your build, and your visitors are not seeing it. But.. i have a pretty simple suggestion.
You could set a TP point for the parcel, and, at that TP point, post a sign that says:

Visitors: To counteract a bug in SL that makes the ocean disappear, please go to the World Menu and Click on Region/Estate... Water will appear properly for the duration of your visit here. Thanks. -The Management.

Something like that.
Like I said... its not your fault and you make a good point. But this might help and its something small you have control over.

It works! Thanks Nicolas. This beach club is one of the most beautiful places in SL.

Or put a script at the landing spot that sends an IM to every guest saying that if they can't see the water to try the work-around :).

& your != you're *hides* :p

YAY
:) :) :)
apparently they fixed it today. I'd rather look stupid on the beach than be a smartass in a desert!

drat, turns out it isn't fixed after all. now it works properly sometimes and other times even the workaround doesn't work.

In an effort to be not quite so stupid I looked up what maintenance is... this is what I'm paying $150/month for:

---
maintain (PRESERVE) Show phonetics
verb [T]
to keep a road, machine, building, etc. in good condition:
A large house costs a lot to maintain.
The roads around the town have been very poorly maintained.
---

Obviously Lindenlab uses the third option. Now I'm smart

Add some flat, white prims with a transparency of 20-40% around your land, covering the water area. Then put up a sign with a note, apologizing to all visitors for the fact that, alas, the sea has frozen over this year. You could give out free scripted ice skates.

Create a transparent blue/green tinted prim and put it where the water was,

I've done this at Nectaris Art. Unfortunately, since I don't own all the water inlet, it does mean slightly more enthusiastic skaters could find themselves reaching the 'thin ice' and plummeting 20ft to the seabed.

Don't worry about it - people who follow the known bugs and the forums know (or will find out) the fix - and even those who don't will have seen it happen elsewhere and won't hold it against you :) Telling people how to mend it is a nice touch that'll help out those who don't know the trick already.

Alas, I have the same problem. Coming home from my SL travels, I arrive to see my boats bobbing gently in midair 10 meters above a rocky void, my fish flying in lazy circles near the face of a cliff.

So between this and the sim-crossing problem, this would-be sailor is spending more of his time on a small platform 600 meters above the ground trying to work through prim-drift and texturing issues while dodging flying obscenity-spouting Christmas presents, and wondering whether the next update will break my expensive new sexgen matress.

At least SL still works as a porn platform.
