You could just go to the "register" page of SL and scroll through the list of names? You don't have to actually register for that.

No. What if you double click in the surname field when you try to login at http://secondlife.com/account? Did IE/FF auto-remember the last name? Assuming an activation email was sent, do you still have the email account it was registered with...and is there a chance you didn't delete the mail? If the alt was created in the last six months, the surnames haven't been rotated in all that time, so maybe clicking through the present available names will jog your memory?

Edit: >>

Assuming you're using Windows XP, launch Second Life (don't login) and click the Preferences button, then the Network tab. In the 'disk cache' location section, you'll see a folder name. Something like:

C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Second Life\cache

Ignoring the \cache bit on the end, navigate to the above Second Life folder in Windows Explorer, and you'll see a unique folder corresponding to the name of every avatar you've ever logged into Second Life with.

Assuming you've logged into SL with your alt just once (and haven't reinstalled the Operating System since), you should see its name there.

If you don't see the 'Application Data' folder as you're clicking through Explorer, you'll have to 'show hidden folders'. This is under Tools > Folder Options > View Tab in Explorer, and you can easily change it back afterwards.

I don't see a TOS violation...did she say that she paid for it or not? And currently, isn't the $10US fee waived?
