Anyone know where I can rent just some airspace to build on? I don't want to rent a skybox, just the space so I can build mu own.

Rent any land and you can build in the sky. Only thing to watch out for is--especially on private islands, there may be regulations/covenants (building codes) about building in the sky. Ask the owner first.

The same way people answered your exact same post earlier.

Further to the original question:

Do land rights extend upwards indefinitely or is there a height above which one find a space and build a permanent sky platform?

Actually the land cap is about 768M up. Anything above that I would suspect is unstable or not recommended for use..

It isn't safe or recommended to build above 768 Meters altitude. SL's building results become unstable above that altitude. It's possible to fly higher than that, however, with a flight assist. I've hit 4,000 Meters in free flight before, on a whim.

As I recall, the ability to control access to your parcel with ban lines or explicit ban lists now extends to 768 Meters as well.

So, in short, rent or buy enough land in the sim to support the number of prims you want to use, and build at whatever altitude the sim owner permits.

An example of sky restrictions. A couple of private sims I manage don't allow sky builds below 300 Meters, to keep the view uncluttered for people on the ground. 300 M puts them above the cloud layer, and above unassisted flight range. But sky builds between 300 and 768 are fine.

I'm not sure if that was the case before, but it doesn't seem to be the case with the new update:

Bug fixes:
* You can now correctly fly a vehicle above the ban limits of a parcel when banned
