I've finaly got past orientaion and help island. I'm now in the world and at a loss. I have had a little bit of help from one or two people so far but would like to go explore. Anyone got any suggestions on what to do first? Thanks

Well, sprucing up your avatar can help a lot with social interactions; this generally requires either spending a little cash or spending some time digging through freebie boxes for the nicer stuff. If your av is human female, Sin Skins has a nice free skin pack and several places offer newbie hair for little or no money...ETD, Calla, and Gurl Six spring to mind. It's a little more difficult for the male avs, just in general. Our very own Lucrezia Lamont has also been putting together some information to help new Residents out, so you might IM her in world about it.

As for exploring itself, there have been a ton of threads on the forums about great places to visit. The search function here isn't the greatest, but a little digging should pull up something helpful. Try this one to start:

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

Explore.

Explore and understand that everything is created by someone like you--a citizen. What do you plan on getting out of Second Life (SL)? Do you just want to explore? Do you want to buy cool things? Do you want to create things? Do you want to sell things?

There is so much to see. I suggest you get familiar with the SEARCH tool--that's how I got started...from there your interests will gradually gain focus.

Welcome!

Go to Search, click Places/Shopping, and search for The Free Dove. Teleport there. They have lots of free hair, clothes, etc. to get you off to a good start.

Again, use Search and input "Newbies". There are Resident-run places and organizations within SL just to provide assistance to the newly born

If you're looking for a nice quiet place to unwrap some packages, earn a few $L by playing Trivia and camping, or just to chat with some folks, do a search on "Calla". The main hair store is huuuuuge, but they have a pleasant outdoor gazebo with camping chairs.

If you're feeling adventurous, open the Map and look for places with lots of green dots (people). Go there and see whatever it is that's attracted a crowd.

If you like, IM me. I enjoy meeting new residents in-world.

I would suggest you try the NCI Plaza or the Shelter. Play with the Search for Places. And talk to people. They can give you Land Marks to check out. Try the Ivory Tower for more building tutorial. And there is always shopping. You can also do what’s called Dot Hopping. Just look on the map for lots of green dots then double click next to them to teleport in. It will probably be bunch of campers, but could be a club, or a shopping mall. That’s what makes it fun, you never know. ;)

How about taking some classes so that you learn how to DO stuff? Look in Search, Events, Education. There are lots of free classes. You will feel like you're actually occupying your time in something productive, not just endlessly walking around with no goals.

Random Searches
07-25-2007 13:00
What are you interested in doing or learning about?

Just open up "Search" and type in some random interesting words on subjects that tickle your fancy. Scroll through the results and teleport to anyplace that looks interesting. Once your there, walk and fly around, talk to anyone you meet, and see what comes up.

The Search tool is pretty random, so you never know what you'll get--and that's half the fun!

Don't spend more than L$1 on anything until you've ransacked the major freebie places and found out what you can get for free, or virtually free. Plus, you will have a better lline on values in this new world, and will know when someone is trying to sell unsuspecting you something for hundreds of Linden Dollars that is available for free.

And start organizing your inventory now! It builds faster than you can possibly imagine.

If you aren't offended by adult content, visit Dark Delights and pick up a free walk replacer.
We sell photorealistic skins, avatars and avatar accessories of all sorts. The shop and the surrounding island is also a nice place to explore and... uhm... play with the countless demo toys. Who knows, you might walk out as a demoness or a tentacle creature :)

Have fun! If you ever buy land don't set your land to "anyone" ever if you mean to sell it to a specific person. Also never give anyone permission to debit money from your account. And wear a condom.

No, decide for YOURSELF whether you want to spend actual money. You don't have to, of course, but a lot of the freebies are...how can I put this delicately? Absolute crap. If you do decide to pay money in, though, give yourself a budget and stick to it. Spending can get away from you, especially in the early days of Residency when everything is so new and different.

AGREE! And also with your post below about the crap - but in among the crap are some quite good things. Sort the wheat from the chaff, and then, when you know what the wheat is like here, then go shopping, if you must.

Caveat emptor.
