Is there special software required, or a simple way to upload it and play in sl? Any help would be appreciated. I'm no expert on this issue, but I believe you can add a sound file to an object. i.e. those pianos some people have. I'm sure there is some file size limit for that, once again not sure how big that is. As for just playing music off your computer to sl, thats only possible by streaming. However from what your asking, "can I upload files to sl". There is a way, format, file size, method. The exact details depends on exactly how much you plan to upload and how you plan to use it I would guess. If you thinking like a media player with your own library of music in sl, a radio perhaps? Thats only possible through streaming due to a file size limit i think. Once again I'm no expert, but that's what I have gathered from talking to different people. |

Thanks Keiichi for your response. I think putting a file in an object might be a good way to start. Does anyone know how this is done. I can make objects and use scripts etc well, just don't know what file size and type etc I would need to upload etc.

Sound files are limited to 10 seconds, so they're not much of a solution.
I understand there's a way to put a web page as a texture on an object (or perhaps it's coming soon). Give that, you could have an object that pulls up a webpage with a sound feed. I'm thinking of trying something like that. (I'm hoping that somehow the link can open the default browser, but that may not be the case.) Worst case is you could post a sign with a URL for folks to use in their normal browser. |

Yea figured it would be some insignificant file size. 10 secs is enough to do a loop of a bar or two. The sound feed method is good from a webpage. You might be limited by your isp on the amount of bandwith you can use. Really depends on what the purpose of this is. There are methods using a low cost stream provider that you can setup a playlist on the actual streaming server and control from a web browser. This would save yourself upload bandwith to stream from your home to a server. If your an audiophile I wouldn't go with anything less than a 96k stream. Since you really cant get more than 40 listeners at one time, you can get maybe a 20 listener connection fairly cheap. |

Yes, If your computer is accessible from the internet i.e. has a web folder shared, then yes. Just share the folder on the web and enter the url into the media field on the land properties. Alternatively you can upload the track to a friends web site, which is what I do, and then provide the url from there. In my case I have a programmable radio and have replaced several of the channels with url's to my own music. It helps to compress the files to a very low bit rate, I used 24bits, to save web space and bandwidth but it works well in SL. Contact me in world if you need a practical demonstration of the above ![]() |

I assume you mean 24 kbits/sec (not "24 bits"
![]() For low bit rate audio, anything at 128k or below, be sure to NOT use the "Blade" codec that many programs have built-in. Blade was designed for best results at high bit rates (256k and higher), and was a very early and not particularly good encoder. At 128k and below, it sounds terrible! Try the LAME codec for much better results. For example, it comes as a part of the excellent dBPowerAmp Music Converter, which is $12 to register (IIRC). It's available in other converters as well. Stereo music at 64kbit is reasonable, and 128k is close enough to CD for the average casual non-audiophile listener. My answer above about web pages was off-topic -- I misread your post. (You are the property owner, I was thinking about the non-owner case.) |

Just a note here on streaming rates. 24kbps is very low quality. Usually only talk radio uses that kind of bitrate. For music your going to get extremely muffled sound with small to no high points in the sound range. Most online radio stations use a bitrate of 128k. Mainly because it's around CD quality and allows for more listeners. ACtually I believe CD quality is more near 300k. Bandwith is very expensive if used in large amounts. Some stream at 192k which is nicer in the sound department. I think SL only supports .mp3 extensions, so any provider that is selling windows media servers, I don't believe their extension works. There is a little bit of a learning curve to streaming music, but it just takes a little research to know what your getting into. Just like anything really.
1 listener is 128kbps so if you want to have 10 listeners you have to factor 128k x 10 This is why its virtually impossible to stream just from a home connection. Think the average home connection can get you maybe 300-500 kbps UPLOAD You can check your own connection running a speedtest at www.dslreports.com/stest to see what I am talking about. Some hosts offer unlimited bandwith usage, "unmetered" which is good if it is for high usage. Some have bandwith caps, 10GB/month etc. So for every second 1 listener is connected at 128k thats taken out of your usage of bandwith. |

If you just want to play an mp3 , you need to upload it to a web host/site
that alows it to be streamed and paste the url www.mysite.mysound.mp3 into the auidio box. This will work but will stop and re start when you cross the land boundrys as well as anyone else. I did this with a podcast I do it was an hour long mp3 witch worked if you and your guest came at the same time and stayed. if some one comes in after you start to hear a min or two later they will be at the begining and you will be 1 or 2 min into the file. To properly do streaming sound you have to broadcast to a relay server or broadcast from your computer via shoutcast and basicly you would be playing music in win amp or??? and sending it to a shoutcast or ice cast relay. _____________________

You can run Winamp in the background.

for non-streaming music, if you own the land just:
1. click your land, summon up the pie menu "About Land" 2. enter the URL of the mp3 you want to feed 3. that's it |
