What is the optimal upload size in uploading a profile picture for SL where it won't distort the image by stretching the face?

Optimal Size

Oh, and in size, I mean dimensions, not like size as in kilobytes. And is there a universal rule in this that applies for all images to avoid distortion?
Thanks,

For a profile pic, a 256x256 would give you good resolution. You can go smaller, depending on how much detail there is in the picture, but unless you have a repeatable texture (i.e., it can be tiled on a prim using repeats), I wouldn't suggest it. Anything larger would be a waste of space (not to mention bandwidth) given the size of a picture in the profile.

From: Kamael Xevious For a profile pic, a 256x256 would give you good resolution. But that doesn't solve the ratio problem. If you upload a square, you get a distorted profile image. To get around this problem, I simply took a screenshot of the Profile window and then cropped my photo to fit that ratio. Of course, it helps to have photoshop. The profile photo texture that I created was 512 x 385 and that seemed to display without distortion. You can divide each by 2 to get the smaller version: 256 x 192 (slightly rounded, but shouldn't be noticeable).

Oops, I missed that part of it. My bad.
My solution has been to take the picture in high resolution and save it to the harddrive. I then open it in whatever graphics program strikes my fancy at the time, and resize it to 256 pixels on the horizontal while the "Keep Proportions" option is checked and locked. That way the graphics program keeps the ratio correct without me having to do any math. Then I save it as a .tga and upload it to complete the process.

Kam I assume that this works because when you upload it SL will resize the picture to be a power of two in both dimensions (distorting it in the process), then when it displays it in the profile pic it stretches the pic to fit whatever the hell dimensions they use there, distorting it again but at least somewhat close to what you had intended in the first place?

Profile pics have a similar aspect ratio to a screen shot. If you save to disk, you get that aspect ratio in the resulting pic. Crop it as desired, maintaining that aspect ratio between the sides. Then just before you upload to SL, re-scale the pic to be 128 x 128 pixels. Anything more is a waste if bandwidth.
This squashes the saved pic a bit sideways, and when the profile displays it, the pic streaches back out again by the same amount, and it looks normal.
The problem is that SL can only deal with images whose sides are a power of two from 32 to 1024 in size. The standard snapshot is 512 x 512 for that reason, which squashes it sideways a bit. But if you take that snapshot and dosplay it in the profile, then just as above, it gets streached on display, and looks normal.
FYI - The pics in Classified Ads are closer to a 2 to 1 aspect ratio, twice as wide as they are tall.
