Do you have any particular art programs like paintshop or photoshop? Also you might want to scroll down the forums list and post your question under content creation- texturing tips.

I'd start with downloading Chip Midnight's body templates from . For tattoos, you'll only need the upper and lower body template.

The templates show you how a plain image file is applied to the 3-dimensional avatar. Create a new layer in one of these files (in Photoshop or a similar paint program) and draw your tattoo, or paste a scan of your work into the file. Select the transparency of the new layer (Ctrl + click on the layer name) and save the selection. You will get a new alpha channel that will become a transparency mask in SL later; black parts are transparent, white parts will be visible.

Reduce the image to the background layer (flatten), save it as TGA (Targa file) and select 32 bit color. Upload it into SL. Create a new shirt, undershirt, gloves or pants, depending on the position of the tattoo on the body, and assign your uploaded texture to the clothes. That's all :)

I would look in the texturing forum- there are tutorials and links in the sticky posts.
