Ok admittedly there are problems: bugs, server infrastructure lag etc etc but at the end of the day LL have brought us the amazing thing that is SL which is no mean feat I would suggest.

Isn't about time somebody said "well done LL for giving millions of people a place to explore, create and interact in a way that we could have only dreamed of a few years ago"

I reckon that's pretty damn cool myself.

Thanks guys!

ps this is not a LL sponsored post ;)

Well done LL for giving millions of people a place
to explore, create and interact in a way that we
could have only dreamed of a few years ago!

=)

Yes, Amy, I agree wholeheartedly.

Linden Labs has succeeded in providing
a platform that many people are investing their
lives and souls in, as well as time and money.

As such, emotions run high at the mountains
in Osmium.

* * *

I remember my first connecting to bulletin boards,
pre-Internet, at 300 baud. The gopher system
back then required that if you wanted a particular
file from a server at let's say the University of
Minnesota you would send a hand-encrypted
ftp script in an email to another university which
would then get the file via FTP, which it would
then uuencode and send back in pieces via
separate emails. Then a day or two later via
FidoMail (which only came in bulk every 24 hours)
you would copy/paste the piece into a single
file and uudecode. And half the time it wouldn't
be the file you wanted in the first place. Or
parts would be hopelessly corrupted. Lol.

It's a bit easier now!

* * *

As long as Linden Lab keeps the game going
it too will improve and I don't think they've
ever suggested there won't be any bump in
the road along the way.

In my experience over the years helping people
with computers, software and the internet, the
problems people encounter are like 75% some
silly thing they overlooked and didn't understand,
ie, "is it plugged in?"...

Nice post infra :)

I think about 75% of SL users probably don't realise that anything at all existed before the internet

I wonder how long it would take to render a sim at 300baud? Bandwidth? Who needs it...

well.............. <thinks of something that IS suitable for the forums>.... downtime was always good ;) .. <tissues at hand and away from the fax machine>... the biggest problem was, we were 12 hour time zones apart, so by the time you received a reply to a... ermm.... question like 'what are you wearing now?'..... the mood had gone LOLOL....

It's human nature for people to moan when they are unhappy and to keep quiet when they are satisfied/happy. Add to that the fact that this is a forum and pretty much every forum I've visited since forums were invented have a % of people whos only mission in life is to moan and whine, then its to be expected. What we need is to purge the forums. Anyone with a negative comment gets lynch mobbed, stripped naked and locked in a cage for the day in the lagiest mainland sim and bared from the forum and only people with fluffy happy attitudes get to make posts. That would really cheer me up :)

Although I like to moan about all the moaners so i'll prolly end up in the cage as well.

Dammit

LOL Porky. I see it like this:
A minority of the SL population have problems. They come and rant or politely ask questions. The vast majority who do not have problems, log inworld and never get seen here .....

... while those of us whose only problems with SL is their mean, nasty, totalitarian, gestapo system administrators won't let them download the client ..... amuse themselves here ;)

I think its better that people moan than simply leave. Moaning shows they are interested enough to voice their concerns in the hopes of them being addressed. If they could find no redeeming features in SL then they wouldn't moan, they'd just stop using it. I get so annoyed when I see the "You don't like it? Leave it!" argument being used in so many threads, it just shows a complete lack of appreciation for how the person feels.

At the same time there does seem to be a welling of frustration at the moment and I guess its only natural that once the ball gets rolling, others join in. For every person who can't get anything to work there are ten others chiming in because they get Ruthed once in a while. Its interesting how easily people assume their own experience is the same as everyone else's though: for every unsubtle "SL is ruined and nothing works" there is another post rubbishing their claims because "everything is ok on MY end". I think the majority lie in the middle as usual, nothing's perfect, good days and bad. With more people comes more happy and more angry people, it seems like more are complaining but, proportionally, it probably hasn't increased all that much at the extremes.

LL do a hard job, I haven't been in SL very long but I'm impressed by the scale and scope. Things will never work but I can sympathise with the frustration of some people who, when they can't log on or have lost real money through glitches, then read a post about the wonderous new features being rolled out rather than a message saying the problems being encountered are now priority over everything and will be remedied immediately. LL needs to employ some tact in that respect.

I signed the petition and agree with prety much all of the content. Stability could be improved and should be improved before new bells and whistles are added. They won't impress us if they are only a reminder that the existing problems weren't a priority. The crux is communication though, the letter asks for a little more transparency from LL so that those that do complain don't feel they are beating their heads against a brick wall. I'd be surprised if anyone disagrees with this point in particular.

It would be better if people praised in equal measures but human nature leans towards silent contentment and noisy malcontentment.

This was much longer and more rambling than I meant it to be so I apologise for that if you made it to the end. :)

Bilbo, you should enrol in college for a few years, become a system administrator, use some dastardly underhanded tactic to get your current administrator fired then sleep with the boss to get the system admin job.

the solution is simple....suprised you didnt think of it yourself :)

I signed the open letter out of a great level of frustration with inventory problems and TP problems and a number of other issues, but the truth is that I would not have done so had I not been completely enthralled with this world and what is has to offer. Though the issues drive me crazy sometimes, I cannot imagine running away from them.

Indeed, thank you Lindens!

After all, we are in the stone age, as far as computers go. They barely even existed just 50 years ago. Since I'm not really a gamer, I think of SL as the start of something entirely new, like the web and internet was just a couple/few decades back. We have to expect a glitch or two in the creation of something huge but completely different. We live in exciting times. :D

This is of course very true - and I don't dispute it at all, I also agree that people who moan also care enough about it to moan which is in fact a good thing.

(Unless your English like me in which case we moaning as often as we can even if we care or not is something of a tradition)

I just know that every once in a while it's just nice to be told "well done" - and sometimes that motivates ppl to do even better ;)

An excellent Point.
