I've just installed Second life for the first time and the game is crashing the instant I try to run it. It sends an error log but doesn't tell me what the problem is. The only mention of this sort of problem in the knowledge base says to uninstall and destroy the cache. Well I've reinstalled the thing several times but it still doesn't work. What exactly does it mean by empything the cache? Any one else has a similiar problem to this?

Welcome to Second Life.
What is your Processor type Amount of Ram Operating System Video card Type of internet connection Networked or not? If networked, wired or wireless? Do you meet the system requirements: http://secondlife.com/corporate/sysreqs.php Are you trying to use the regular viewer, the first one shown on the download page, or did you get the First Look viewer? One should probably start with the regular viewer. _____________________

This is my entire system profile. This meets the recommended system listed there. Every driver is up to date. It seems to crash while it is trying to detect hardware.

It is an E-Machine.
I am just kidding. What version of the video driver do you have? _____________________

Do you use a router? If so, wired or wireless? I don't see that in the specs.
You may need to make sure that ports are open properly, if memory serves, port 12043 needs to be open for both UDP and TCP. What kind of anti-virus and anti-spyware and other anti-malware software are you running? You may need to tell your anti-malware software to keeps it's mitts off SL. _____________________

What version of the video driver do you have? The specs say "ver 7.2 catalyst drivers". _____________________

Well, if the First Look viewer works for you, all the better, so long as it doesn't have any subtle crippling flaws.
You might try redownloading the normal viewer. There will be an upgrade this Wednesday, I believe, with an optional new regular viewer, so maybe First Look will do till then. Do you get the login screen using the regular viewer? If so you might try checking to see what the preferences are set to. _____________________
