I just started this week.
I bought some land and a TNT free prefab house. under objects in my inventory it shows TNT FREE 512 HOUSE (gift box). When I drag the item on to my land I get a cube with a picture of the building on it.
So, How do I put the actual house on the land?

Many items in SL come "packaged." You need to remove the item from the box. With the box sitting on the ground, click on the box and choose "open". You will find a button to move the contents of the box into your inventory, once the contents are in your inventory, you can then drag the house out to rez it.
