Sims and Auto Return...

Help me understand this...
I've rented store space in a commercial sim for a few months now. The sim owner refuses to set the land to auto return stating she 'has her reasons' but she refused to elaborate. EVERY single time I've ever landed there I've had to IM her to come remove something. There have been times when the landing spot was so loaded with crap you couldn't even get to the shopping areas. One time someone was even running a full casino complete with camping chairs right on the landing spot. Last night after landing in the middle of about a hundred giant hairy peckers and French political posters, I got fed up and left.
So why.... Why on god's green earth would anyone want to deal with that every day of their life when they could solve the problem by simply setting the land to auto return. Set up a group - invite all your renters - give them a couple weeks to head down and set their items to group... Problem solved.
Apparently not that easy though because I must be missing something.

Find another place where to set up your shop, some land where you'll have ownership of your parcel for the lease time and where you can set autoreturn (check covenant)

Right. Time to move out of there ASAP. Sounds like you're just wasting money. You're not getting value for money, whatever you are paying there, because who would buy from your store under these conditions?

Thanks for the replies guys.
Yes Mattie, I do own my own 'home' store elsewhere and my auto return is set to a minute. Even in my quiet, out of the way corner I had people coming by and unpacking their inventory in my courtyard.
Really I'm just curious as to what reasons a person would have for not using the auto return feature. I know it's her land, and she's allowed to do what she wants. And I'm no longer renting so it's no skin off my hiney. I'm just boggled as to what her reasoning could be for not using auto return.

If the parcel you are renting is "owned" by you then i can't see any reasonable reason for not letting you set autoreturn. If lands is hers and it's not cut as a parcel.. like she owns the whole land on the sim herself, she migt be lazy of setting all objects to group before enabling the autoreturn.. like if she sets autoreturn she might have returned to herself or other members objects that needs to stay there (like plants or walkways or other common areas). Btw I think it's not a reasonable reason I believe a good land owner should care MORE about their tenants than just the money they get from them! If you need a commercial PG land for rent to place your shop on lemme know ^^

Beats me. The answer "I have my reasons" is, well, rather stupid.
BTW, on the (group owned) land I'm renting out, by default I also have auto-return de-activated. I do this because my tenants forget half of the time to set their objects to the right group. Once somebody came clamoring because everything he rezzed just before has been bounced back to his Lost&Found and he believed that I was after him.

Auto-return rocks. And you only have to get a days' worth of work auto-returned (and coalesced into 'object') once, for you to learn the Valuable Lesson about having the right group tag acitve while you work.
I have auto return set to 5 minutes on the group areas of my island, which include the commercial / mall area. It's such a simple thing to make sure you have the correct group tag on when rezzing stuff.

Well, it sounds like that mall is definitely one to move out of. Yuk. It's clearly poorly managed and overrun by griefers.
I can tell you one reason not to do auto-return, however. An example of that is a certain a well-run mall that I have a store in. The mall is huge, and is run by the sim owners. I noticed that auto-return wasn't active when I had to call them for some minor clean-up. I asked why, and they noted that the parcel the mall was on was actually too small for the mall prim count. The whole sim could handle it, but if they turned on auto return the way the parcels were allocated at that time, a bunch of vendors and other things that belong in the mall would get returned too! So they manually police the mall, and keep it clean and tidy. Mall merchants still set their prims to the mall merchant group, which makes it very easy for the mall managenemt to locate and identify the "trash", without accidentally taking part of the store display that wasn't obvious to them as belonging there.

That is true for a Mall that usually is on some parcel owned by the land owner, and the rent is just a space to put your stuff in that mall. When renting land though, you dont rent the use of prims withing someone else'es parcel, you really rent land and you should have (almost) all the ownership rights for the lease time. So if would be "your" parcel and you can set autoreturn at your wish (if not disallowed by some rules for some reasons). There's a BIG difference in renting a booth in a mall and renting land^^

Thanks so much for the ideas. I guess I can sorta see now why she might have this policy but really, would have been nice had she just told me instead of "I have my reasons" which usually means something shady if you ask me.
I've had my fair share of auto return nightmares so I know it can be a hassle but in the end, totally worth it. Especially on an entire sim.
Thanks again!
