I know a basic account avitar cal sell land for a group, because i've dome it.
But if he tries to buy land the "no payment details on file" message comes up.
The question is, could he buy land if he did have payment details set up, or would he also have to be a premium member like he does to buy non group land.

Yes, if the basic account group member has been assigned that assigned role in the group, he/she may purchase land if he/she selects the Buy Land for Group button.

A basic account can purchase land on a private island sim, without upgrading to Premium.

Nope, not if they're buying it for a group. I've done it with my basic verified alt. Still a basic verified account. No premium upgrade. Yes, it's mainland. They'll only get upgraded to premium if they're trying to buy it as an individual. That's why it's important to click the Buy Land for Group box. Yikes, I really need to get back to my RL work and get outta the forums!

i can verify what annabelle is saying. my former partner had me buying small mainland parcels (to be flipped) for his group when he was at work and i was at home. i wasn't premium at that time (summer 2006) and selecting the 'buy land for group' option never threatened to upgrade me. i just got a warning about ensuring the group had enough tier donated instead. when i eventually decided to buy land to "live" on, i was upgraded to premium automatically upon selecting the 'buy land' option.
