Friends and Card givers appearing online...but they aren't

Some of my friends and people who given me business cards are currently appearing on-line. But when I try and track those friends on a map, or IM people from both groups, they're not on-line.

But some of my other friends who appear on-line ARE and reply to the IMs.

Is this a fault anyone else has experienced?
