open the snapshot (double click it) and then:

file->"save texture as" it will ask for the location to store it and u can give it a name then, u can do it with any texture aslong u have modify permissions

Warning: That will give you a .tga file. Make sure you can open a .tga file :)

Now we are on the subject? Why are images saved as tga? Is it very good picture format or is there another reason?

Internally they're stored in something called JPEG2000, but there are few graphics editors that deal with that format. It needs to be something that preserves the alpha channel and compresses without loss. Targa (.tga) satisfies those requirements. (There may be others, but that's what comes to mind.)
